Frank E. Tyson (53) was released from prison on 6 April after serving 24 years for kidnapping and theft. On 18 April, he inexplicably lost control of his car on a street in Canton, Ohio, striking a utility pole. Mr. Tyson, possibly disoriented or in shock, made his way to a nearby AMVETS Lodge for help. Body-camera footage from responding police officers shows an unidentified woman opening the social club door saying: “Please get him out of here, now.”
Inside the bar at 8:27 PM, Canton police officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch encounter an upset and uncooperative Tyson and attempt to handcuff him. While wrestling Tyson down to the floor, he can be heard saying “They’re trying to kill me. They’re trying to kill me. Call the sheriff.”
Tyson is restrained on the ground with a knee on his back at 8:29 PM. Officers told Tyson he was “fine, to calm down, and to stop fighting.” Tyson responded, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, get off my neck.”
With Tyson now cuffed and face down on the carpeted floor, the officers talked with bystanders and leafed through his wallet before realizing their detainee was in a medical crisis. At 8:41 PM officers uncuffed him and administered CPR until EMTs arrived at 8:51 PM. Tyson was pronounced dead at a hospital less than one hour later; autopsy results have not been publicly released.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is conducting a probe of the incident while Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch remain on paid administrative leave. The NAACP has called for an independent inquiry.
