The Case for Creationism

by AWhitneyBrown

There are some things that can be known and other things which must be taken on faith, like science. Either you believe that or you do not, and both sides have equal standing. These postulates are self evident, and not open to argument.

If you don't know who James McMurtry is, he's a fantastic singer-songer and progressive activist. You might have heard some his recent songs, like Cheney's Tool, We Can't Make It Here, Choctaw Bingo, or others.
James was at Camp Casey in Crawford, 2005, and has been a great voice for many years. And yes, he's also related to author Larry McMurtry.

Yes On The Bill

by AWhitneyBrown

I have been following this as close as a normal person should, and I think Howard Dean finally learned a lesson from Lieberman and decided to come out against the bill so they'd stop watering it down. Good on him.
As for me, I've finally come around. Abortion I don't care about, since it doesn't affect me, so I can't speak to that, except to ask who gave The Supreme Council of Boy-Fuckers veto power over our health care concerns? Why would anyone listen to those assholes?
As for the individual mandate, think about it...seriously, consider the fines and all, and what it will mean in practice. I'll give you my thinking on the matter below. It might work out better than you think.

Call Me Ishmael

by AWhitneyBrown

With no apologies to Richard Cohen.

All these comparisons of Obama with Hitler scared me so badly that I just HAD to investigate it.
Because it's just not possible that so many people with the exact same skin color as mine could be totally, off the wall, rabid squirrel insane. That's just not believable.

This diary is not about Michael Jackson, since I didn't know Michael Jackson, there is nothing I can say about him with certainty, although that doesn't seem to stop everyone else. Instead, it's about his work, his music, and a few observations about pop culture.
It could as easily be titled, 'What I learned from being (nearly) famous.'
Michael Jackson made some very popular music, just like Marilyn Monroe made some very popular movies, and Elvis made some of both. But after the tragic and early death fades from memory, after the mourning ends, will the work endure? The answer is already in about Elvis' movies, but what about Jackson's music?

In a move that surprised very few, Republican Senator Lindsay Graham left the heterosexual community of which he is thought to have been a part for many years and announced that henceforth he will identify as Gay.
"I didn't leave the breeders," Graham complained, "the breeders left me."

And I think we better listen to them. If you haven't heard that promise in the arguments they're making, let me point them out, because that is what they are saying, very clearly.

The latest argument the Republicans are making is that investigating torture is nothing more than 'criminalizing policy differences'.

I am deeply concerned by this headlong rush to judgement against the alleged Craigslist Killer and his so-called crimes. Before we leap to any conclusions about whether his actions were legal or illegal, shouldn't we ask, did they work?
A strong case can be made that there simply was no other way he could have gotten what he needed from these women in a timely fashion. And let's not forget who he was dealing with here; his alleged 'victims'. Weren't their methods for extracting money and sex from him equally as barbaric, perhaps even worse? That is something we may never know.

But Is Rape Effective?

by AWhitneyBrown

Although I'm not one who has spoken out against rape before, and in fact, I may even have defended it once or twice, it looks the tide of public opinion is now turning decisively against rape, so I would like to publish some arguments against rape at this time, so that I don't look like a total jackass in the eyes of history, and lose my credibility in future policy debates.

Remembrance of an Easter Past

by AWhitneyBrown

And there came a time when a new governor was chosen among the people, and there was rejoicing among the multitudes, for the people were much oppressed and there was a great thirst among them for justice.
But some among the people were much agitated and began to wail and gnash their teeth, for the paying of taxes was a burden unto them, and therefore they began to consult among themselves, and to call themselves together, because of the great anguish they felt.
And they held unto themselves a great gathering, which they called a Teabag Party, and raised a great tumult thereto against their taxes, for it was like a festering boil upon their hides.

I just did, and it felt pretty good. We all know that the DNC is just about broke, partly because it has been pushing all the money out the door to the states as fast as it comes in, and partly because all the attention has been on the primary, and on Obama and Clinton.
I'm a Democrat. I've voted a straight Democratic ticket every two years since 1968, except for maybe a couple I might have missed when I was in jail or rehab or love.
I'm not a Reagan Democrat, I despised the man. I wasn't fooled by Bush, the first time or the second. I pissed in their general direction, both of them, posers each in their own way.
And because I've been a Democrat all these years, I am rejoicing today that I didn't have to make one of the toughest choices I can remember, to swallow the bile and vote for another political family dynasty. I, we, all dodged a bullet.
This diary is pretty simple.
