I Can't Breathe In Arizona

by AZ Desert Rat

It appears I have a very strange illness. It afflicts me as I travel further south, and is especially bad in my adopted home of Arizona. I moved there seven years ago for health reasons related to the weather. Now, I am seriously thinking about moving away for my mental wellbeing and physical health. Said simply, #ICantBreatheInAZ.

Please Take Time To Save A Life!

by AZ Desert Rat

Please Sign The Change.Org Petition To Get The Government To Release Research.

What is the government not sharing with you?

What if there were a perfectly safe, very effective treatment for illnesses whose current drugs are ineffective with bad side effects?

What if all you had to do to save a life was to sign a petition?

Twenty thousand signatures could save 20,000 lives a year. Help find out what you have already paid taxes to discover.

1. Many pharmaceuticals made for emotional illnesses work no better than placebo:

">

2. There is an inexpensive, generic drug that is 50 years old that has been proven to relieve most of the symptoms of Depression and PTSD.

Think of our Veterans and your family members who are suffering because people in key places in government may not be looking out for your best interests when their financial motivations run counter to your health needs.

Please read and sign the Change.org petition to force the government to release the data they have gathered over the last 15 years from their own clinical studies on the use of Ketamine for Depression and PTSD.

Coming Out Of The Closet

by AZ Desert Rat

I am seriously mentally ill. Seriously mentally ill people constitute only a small percentage of the population and is a designation reserved for the worst illnesses.  The definitions differ, but the serious mental illnesses diagnosis usually includes schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder.

I guess I’m especially blessed as I’ve earned two SMI diagnoses – bipolar and post-traumatic stress disorder.  There may be another screw or two that someone might diagnose, I won’t quibble. Earn the diagnoses I did, with trauma that dates back to early childhood and genes with truck-sized holes in them.

Another couple of tragic and preventable deaths in the news and more importantly in the lives of friends and family who will forever lose their loved ones. When are we going to do something about it - two more suicides to add to the 38,000 per year

This will be short, linking to this diary.

Discuss

Depression kills at least 100,000 Americans a year (20% of those from suicide).

These deaths are preventable, just like using seat belts has saved so many lives. These people die because the medical community is not providing the best possible care to save them. There is no conspiracy, “simply” the inability of our medical system to use a medication whose patent has expired. Drug companies cannot afford to sell it for this use. Doctors won't take a risk without drug company backing. But if there were enough pressure, then action would be forthcoming.

..or not?  Like many families, holidays bring my extended family together for celebrations.  This year was different for me, and maybe for you as well?  Like many families, I have quite a few very conservative relatives - I love them all.  I have one racist boyfriend of a sister-in-law .. i tolerated him as long as he had the good sense not to challenge a veteran in every sense of the 1960's race riots.  well, this year, he lost all good sense.  the details are for another blog, but what the hell.

then i come back to work and find out almost the same thing happened to friends of mine between conservative and liberal jews - in both cases a conservative trying to instigate physical fights because of minor frustrations.

my idiot-in-law was trying to argue european teachers weren't unionized?  and he wonders why i don't bother talking to him.

anyway, how many other people ran into batshit crazy relatives this year?

This is an update of a blog I wrote early this year. Since then, the tragedy in Connecticut and even more carnage in other communities makes my point. I brought up the sensitive subject of mental illness and guns together because I believe in the next decade we will see a slew of attacks if we don't act.

The Emperor’s New Drugs is a brilliant, brave and detailed book that exposes Big Pharma’s failure to produce effective drugs to treat depression.  If you or a loved one are taking an antidepressant, or are considering taking one, I would strongly urge you to read the book.  It could change your life.

If you care about healthcare delivery in this country, then you should care about how Pharma is treating or not treating the 20% of the population who will someday experience a depression.  You should read the book.  And to be clear, I make nothing by promoting the book – it just speaks truth to power.

The book came out in March 2011 and although followed up with a 60 minutes interview on February 19, 2012, the information failed to ignite a firestorm against Pharma.

Well, it turns out that Dr. Kirsch's work was the first shoe, as we said in the day.  The other shoe, the one that really hurts, is that there is a drug with great promise to treat depression, if only we could get our hands on it.  Maybe that'll start the fire.

More below the fold:

Jack Welch: Consider The Source

by AZ Desert Rat

Just a quick note - I was a newly minted management trainee back in 1982 with the incredible fortune to have a connection to someone on the Board of Directors of General Electric...so, I got a job and got to meet the Man a couple of times.  But the Board member had one piece of advice for me - that I should only stay at GE a few years to learn business skills because, as I was of mixed race, I had no chance of advancing in the company.  After several examples of out-and-out racism, I did move on.

It would seem that Mr. Welch's ability to judge a situation is still weighted down by his pre-occupation with a person's skin color.

Just a really quick diary to point out the obvious from this evening's news from a  Fortune Magazine Article that a supposed federal program of letting criminals walk with guns was in reality feds watching powerlessly as people in arizona legally bought thousands of guns and transferred them to gun traffickers.

That's right, it's the fact that Arizona state law allows unlimited purchases and resales of guns that has led to a large cross country market in guns.

Jan Brewer is behind Fast and Furious - where is the contempt citation, or at least the finger in the face?
