Idiot of the year

by Blue Wind

Tthe Mahatma Gandhi of Hating Gay People:

From the link above:

Restin Meacham, a young man who combines a deep belief that same sex couples should not be allowed to marry with a weak grasp of constitutional law, has gone on a hunger strike to convince the state of Utah to "nullify" the federal court rulings which have made same sex marriage legal in the state for more than two weeks.

Putin: Kerry lies

From the link above:

“We talk with these people. We assume that they are decent. But he lies,” Putin said of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. “And he knows that he lies. That’s pathetic.”
Here is another link:
“I watched the debates in Congress. A congressman asks Mr. Kerry: ‘Is al-Qaida there?’ He says: ‘No, we are telling you responsibly that they are not,’” Putin said in televised comments.

Putin added that the Syrian rebels’ “main combat unit is al-Nusra, an al-Qaida unit. They [the US] are aware of that. … He [Kerry] lied. And he knows that he lied. This is sad.”

That must be good news for the supporters of the war against Syria!   There is a new ally for the intervention:

Albania to support US action in Syria

Now that the administration secured the support of Albania, they must feel much more confident.  Especially as this morning they also secured the support of McCain, Graham and Boehner.

Putin finally talked about Syria.

Putin says it would be 'utter nonsense' for Assad to use chemical arms

From the link above:

Putin said on Saturday that it would be "utter nonsense" for the Syrian government to use chemical weapons when it was winning the war, and urged US President Barack Obama not to attack Syrian forces.

Well, no matter how wrong Cameron was about attacking Syria, he decided to respect the vote of the British Parliament and abandon the idea of bombing Syria.

Cameron deserves credit for respecting the vote in the parliament and the views of the British people who are against unnecessary wars.

But what is going on here?  Obana is considering solo strike!  Yes, isolated with no allies, with no one else willing to repeat another Bush-like attack based on "chemical weapons".

But, wait, I thought we have a congress here also.  Dont we have democracy here?  With only 9% of the American people supporting an attack on Syria, Obama is about to ignore the congress and start another war, possibly more dangerous than the Iraq war?

Obama was elected to a large extent because he promised to respect the US constitution and the rule of law, after the Bush disaster.   He also promised to restore the image of America around the world.  Is he really going to complete ignore the congress?  Even Bush had authorization by the congress when he started the Iraq war.  Will Obama attack Syria without any basic respect for the democratic process and completely isolated internationally?  Alone?

Is that why we elected him for?  Does anyone think seriously that this  is a step up from Bush?  Are nt we supposed to have democracy in this country?

Yes, you read correctly:

Russia has deployed two powerful warships to the Mediterranean Sea

For anyone who does not think an attack on Syria may have catastrophic consequences, this is something to take notice.

I am wondering what may be going on between Russia and the Obama administration that has not made it in the news.   Is that the real reason that UK and the Obama administration seem to be backing down regarding the urgency of strikes?

Strike on Syria Would Lead to Retaliation on Israel, Iran Warns

I happen to think that attacking Syria, even in a very limited way, is a much worse idea than the invasion of Iraq in 2002.

Now this reports in the New York Times confirms my fears.

From the link above:

Iranian lawmakers and commanders issued stark warnings to the United States and its allies on Tuesday, saying any military strike on Syria would lead to a retaliatory attack on Israel fanned by “the flames of outrage.”

This is as serious as it gets:

Syria crisis: Russia and China step up warning over strike

From the BBC News above:

Russia and China have stepped up their warnings against military intervention in Syria, with Moscow saying any such action would have "catastrophic consequences" for the region.
Attacking Syria with cruise missiles would be pure insanity.   It could easily result in a massive war in the middle east with unpredictable consequences that could draw in Iran and even Russia.

Obama emphasizes U.S. commitment to Syrian rebels in Saudi call

The headline above is hard to believe, but it is real.   And the question is why?

The civil war in Syria is a real tragedy with many innocent civilians getting killed.   In the news there is always talk about the crimes of the Assad regime, but much less talk about the crimes of the rebels, many of whom, if not most of them, are extremist jihadists.    Now the United Nations is investigating horrific crimes by them:

U.N. probes allegations of rebel atrocities in Syria

An excellent article by Glenn Greenwald that reveals the real face of the democratic establishment.

Democratic establishment unmasked: prime defenders of NSA bulk spying.  The Obama administration made common cause with the House Republican leadership

From the link above:

One of the worst myths Democratic partisans love to tell themselves - and everyone else - is that the GOP refuses to support President Obama no matter what he does. Like its close cousin - the massively deceitful inside-DC grievance that the two parties refuse to cooperate on anything - it's hard to overstate how false this Democratic myth is. When it comes to foreign policy, war, assassinations, drones, surveillance, secrecy, and civil liberties, President Obama's most stalwart, enthusiastic defenders are often found among the most radical precincts of the Republican Party.

White House attacks plans to curb NSA data collection

The White House is urging Congress to reject an attempt to stop the National Security Agency (NSA) collecting Americans' phone records.
and here is more:
With a key vote coming up, President Barack Obama's spokesman said curbs on the NSA would "hastily dismantle" a vital counter-terrorism tool.
NSA chief Gen Keith Alexander spent Tuesday lobbying Congressmen to vote against the proposed measure.
Is that the "change" Obama promised when he got first elected in 2008?  Maybe he meant "Orwellian change"?    Hard to know.   The only thing that has become clear to me is that George Orwell was a genius.   A real genius.
