I thought I might as well try it again.

In 2008, I was fortunate enough to partner up with Nate Silver just as he was launching 538. I hit the road with the inimitable Sean Quinn and took the photos to accompany his reporting. In his '95 Ford Escort, we drove east across the country, through almost twenty swing states, covering the ground game being played between Senators McCain and Obama. It was a pretty epic 8 week trip.

As the campaign heated up, I felt the itch. Nate was at the Times, and I hear they already have a photographer or two. So I contacted Talking Points Memo, packed up my '98 Volvo, and headed east from San Francisco. The photos below are the result of 16,745 miles, a couple laps around the continental US, and an overwhelming number of peanut butter sandwiches.

Hope you enjoy.

Ferlinghetti - A Documentary Film

Lawrence Ferlinghetti turned 90 a couple weeks ago.  He is the best-selling modern American poet and has been an influential figure on the American political landscape, speaking out for civil rights and the freedom of speech, for six decades.

We have been working with him on a film about his life for the past year and a half (less my hiatus during the election to do Campaign Photography for FiveThirtyEight).

The film premieres at the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 28 and features: Dave Eggers, Dennis Hopper, Robert Scheer, Allen Ginsberg, Billy Collins, Bob Dylan, Gary Snyder, Kenneth Rexroth (more below).

This marks the seventh week I've been on the road through the battleground states of America.  I am a documentary photographer, traveling with the inimitable Sean Quinn over at FiveThirtyEight.

The trip has been a joy, and professionally a labor of love. I've been moved by what I've seen, and I wrote this diary to share it with this community.

Below the fold are photographs I have taken (state by state) of Obama, Biden, and their surrogates; the inspired field organizers; and the dedicated volunteers who have made this all possible, from the ground up.
