Over the next few days I’ll be collecting notes here on a much older story — my trip via bus from Houston to Washington DC for the Women’s March on Washington. This blog is mostly musings about some of the conclusions; I hope to do a similar one for the Science March in Washington DC on Earth Day.
One of the big advantages for this trip was that there was enough interest that buses were chartered to travel to DC. It’s a rather grueling journey of 20 hours there and back, but the timeframe and the physical closeness brought new ties and new friendships. In retrospect, I think this is actually one of the more important things from the women’s march; that expansion of our network to include fellow activists.
Those of us who went on the bus now have a private Facebook group. This is where we discuss political activities (I can’t participate in many of them since almost everyone on the bus is from Houston and I’m from Dallas which is over 250 miles away.) Specific actions are suggested by members and it’s more comfortable to post political articles in this group than it is to post in my regular feed (the expectation is that social feed posts allow you you engage more playfully while a political feed can be full of material that you find outrageous.)
