So, now it’s the Kurds. The list of the betrayed is so long that it is impossible to keep track...and still his cult-members continue to believe. They believe even as they are betrayed themselves one-by-one: farmers, manufacturing workers, evangelicals, rural dwellers, property owners along the border with Mexico, middle class white people...pick ‘em, if they haven’t been betrayed yet, he just hasn’t gotten to them, yet.
Of the non-cult-members, people with whom he has agreements or treaties, or simply the public trust, well forget it. The rest of us are just road-dirt, blown away, swept away, an annoyance, even disgusting.
I just don't understand why the Democrats don’t call out the type, call the game or tactic — party leaders, candidates clutch their pearls (becoming a cliche’ in these troubled times) and provide commentary, reactions to each latest outrage.
The Democrats inability to string a message together on the principle, the patterns in front of them continues to astound and enrage me. Trump Betrays Everyone. Trump Lies All the Time. Nothing He Says is True. Trump Belongs in Jail, Not the White House. Who cares about each latest outrage — reacting, providing commentary on each one as if it is an isolated incident, unrelated to any sort of pattern, it’s like infants reacting to a surprise that is repeated over and over. What matters is the principle it reveals — He Betrays Everyone. Even saying “Everything Trump Touches Dies” misses the point. He Betrays Everyone. It is what he is and what he does.
Hell, he’s betrayed 3 wives, all his kids, all his friends, all his business associates — what in the world makes anyone think they’re entitled to any other treatment? If you let him surprise you, betray you, it is your own damn fault — America, you’ve been betrayed and you will betrayed again and again. Allies, you’ve been betrayed and you will again and again. Enemies, you may find temporary advantage, because he's betraying everyone else, but you too will be betrayed, or are already.
He’s going to run on “Promises Made, Promises Kept”. Dems need to label all of that with “Pfffftt. It is all false and covered in betrayal. There is no reason on earth to believe in him”. Neo-nazis, white supremacists, you’re not special, either. Christianists, dominionists, anti-christian “christians”, you aren’t special. Rich white guys, you too. You've already been betrayed and you may not know it or realize it. Get ready.
But...the big, ole but. It’s not just Trump! The conservatives have been in the betrayal game for a very long time. It’s what they do — sell out America and Americans for their own self-interest. Hell, the ones that are the Ayn Randians aren’t even hiding it! They tell us flat out that their own interests supersede anyone else’s, so sod off.
Dribble down economics, self-reliance, small government, personal responsibility, freedom and liberty, jobs, business growth, blah, blah, blah — it’s all cover for “Bite me, I’m getting mine”. One more sermon from George Will as the high priest of conservatism and I’m going to barf. Some of that sounded high-minded back in the late 70s, but how’s that worked out for us?
Look, if someone had told you in 1980 that we are in for a future that has been our history over the past 40 years, would you buy that future with your vote? As a conservative, could you look forward to nearly a half-century of lower growth, lower wages for most working Americans, an exploded deficit and debt due to lowered taxes for the wealthy shifting burden onto those same wage-stunted Americans while taking on unbelievably expensive foreign wars, the inhumane treatment of civilian populations, inhuman treatment of refugees driven from their countries by violence fomented by this country, and that it would come to a point with the orangutan as president? Would you vote for that? What sort of cretin would vote for that? What sort of cretin would continue to vote for that, even knowing the history?
But, Democrats have been complicit and have simply sat back and taken it, not called out the continuing string of failures as the pattern and consequence of conservatism. Liberalism died under attack by conservatives as a “Failed Philosophy”, the “failed liberal agenda”, “failed liberal policies” — hell, we sat back and just took it, bowed our heads or shook our fists and let it be said without rebuttal or counter-attack.
Here we are in 2019, entering nearly the 50th year of the conservative ascendency that began even before Carter and was advanced in his administration, and Democrats are still not getting it. Conservatism has failed. The country is much worse off and it is the conservatives fault. They had their crack and it turned out like it always turns out, with crash, depression, war, poverty, extreme wealth for a few and weird social engineering policies from the wealthy few who dominate due to wealth and power. And an orangutan in charge. Conservatism IS the dustbin of history — it’s where the spirit and soul of a nation go to die.
We have the means, the facts, the message, the people to do away with the dustbin — Democrats, get your shit together, There is no tomorrow.
