I grew up with the same belief as most, that psychophysiologic [better known as psychosomatic] disorders were "all in your head."  I didn't learn better until my 2nd year of nursing school, so it occurs to me that others may be similarly confused.

Psychosomatic Disorders

Psychosomatic disorders are manifestations of physical imbalance in which emotional components have a strong influence. The link between the affect and compromised health issues can be followed, in such cases, as the disease emerges, develops or repeats its pattern over time. "Psycho" or "psyche" refers to the emotional or mind related aspects and "somatic" has to do with the organic or physical symptoms and signs observed.

Recent research has revealed that inappropriate activation of the autonomous nervous apparatus, endocrine network (hormones and internal secretion glands), and the immune system (defence structures and cells) accounts for several of the known paths that link emotional overload to a condition of organic dysfunction and, in some cases, even physical damage.

Now that we have a working definition, lets see how that works in real life.

a block of nine abstract depictions of disabilities
KosAbility is a Sunday 4PM leftkost/7PM east volunteer diarist community of, by & for people living with disabilities, who love someone with a disability, or who want to know more about the issues. Our use of disability includes temporary as well as permanent health/medical conditions — from small, gnawing problems to major, life- threatening ones. Our use of love someone extends to cherished members of other species.

Our discussions are open threads in the context of this community. Feel free to comment on the diary topic, ask questions of the diarist or to everyone generally, share something you've learned, tell bad jokes, post photos, or rage about your situation. Our only rule is to be kind; trolls will be spayed or neutered. If you're interested in contributing a diary, contact series coordinator postmodernista.

In fact, do it right now, so you don’t forget.

Get out your ID, and make sure there is at least two contact phone numbers right in there with it.

You may be thinking, “Why? I have all that in my cell phone.  And the cops will send someone to my house, using the driver’s license address.”

That’s what I thought, too.

HeyMikey posted this extreemly helpful comment on the different programs run by SSA.

This requires a fairly geeky level of understanding of how the retirement and disability programs work. But as Ross Perot said, hang in here with me for a minute.

You might want to eyeball it by clicking on his name link above, before slipping through the "Infinity sign" a la kos...

Dear New York State Senator Tom Libous,

Are you a complete and total idiot?  Or do you just assume your constituents are?  More below the fold.

It was suggested I diary about how NYS was able to ban fracking, as our fellow humans in Pennsylvania are dying to know how we pulled it off.  The problem is, I don't know I was a participant, not an organizer.

So I decided to write this from a participant's POV, as getting people to participate is what adds up to victory.

Personally,  I would love to repay the people from towns like Dimock, PA, who showed up to our Albany rallies with bottles of contaminated water, and their personal stories of what fracking has done to their homes, families, and communities. IMHO, getting there boils down to three main points.  Please proceed through the Infinity Sign a la Kos, and I will explain.

Money, and capitalism, are in and of themselves soulless, neither good nor evil.  Like all tools, they come alive in the hands of their master.

The ways by which you may get money almost without exception lead downward. To have done anything by which you earned money merely is to have been truly idle or worse.     Henry David Thoreau, Life without Principle
I agree.  I much prefer to work at some task that satisfies my mind and spirit, and need not think about it feeding my body, unless I am uncommonly hungry. Yet even that great Transcendental anti-materialist, Thoreau, had to admit the native wisdom of woodcutter  Alex Therien’s reasoning for the utility of cash:
When I asked him if he could do without money, he showed the convenience of money in such a way as to suggest and coincide with the most philosophical accounts of the origin of this institution, and the very derivation of the word pecunia. If an ox were his property, and he wished to get needles and thread at the store, he thought it would be inconvenient and impossible soon to go on mortgaging some portion of the creature each time to that amount.    Walden

My civil service job

by NancyWH

Two days ago, I made this comment:

FWIW,
every work day, I turn on my government computer, and read the daily warning that I have NO expectation of privacy while on government time, taking a government paycheck.  Everything I do on that computer can and will be overseen by someone.

I'm a disability analyst, armed with a pretty deadly keyboard.  I  have to account for MY behavior on the government dime.  Why someone walking around with a government provided deadly weapon is not held to as high, or higher, standard is beyond comprehension.

Then xxdr zombiexx shared:
I work for a Medicare program and have to
(A) do things according to established standards

(B) am subject to audits

(C) actually have to be correct

(D) have an ethical responsibility to turn in unethical therapists.

If a therapist is molesting a child, I can't just turn a blind eye, like the PIGS do

And buddabelly added:
it appears the ethical standards I had to live with in Automotive repair are higher than some criminal justice systems......
xxdr zombiexx pointed me to his diary: Bad Therapist

So it got me curious, because I take a lot of mandatory training, what else I have at my job that LEOs seem to be missing.  Follow me through the Infinity sign a la kos to see what I discovered.
