What seems to be the first Impeach Trump rally in the U.S. was held Friday in the small city of Valdosta, Georgia, deep in the southern part of the state. Basically, Valdosta is the last stop on I-75 heading for Florida before you hit the state line. When Trump came to Georgia last year before the primary, he came here in March 2016, and 12,000 people showed from in a city of 50,000. Trump got about 57% of the vote here last November.
As it happened, a pro-Trump activist from north Florida got wind of the rally, and petitioned to have a counter rally in opposition. Both sides got permits, and had to meet simultaneously with local law enforcement last Wednesday. I love my local law enforcement. Especially the Valdosta Police Department, but the Lowndes County sheriff’s department is not far behind. They handled this whole thing entirely professionally, which is what you want. The Valdosta Police Department even delivered water to both sides during the demonstration period. There were actually more law enforcement officers than both groups combined.
They say both sides had thirty five people show up, but whenever I counted the pro-Trump side I got half that. Maybe eighteen. I took note it was less than twenty. And they had to come from outside the area at that. The pro-Trumpers came in a little after 11:00 with flags flying, led by a combination MIA-POW flag with the stars and bars. There followed a couple of Trump flags, and then an American flag bringing up the rear. Pretty much told me, a local, where they were coming from.
In the end, the impeach Trump folks had their rally. The pro-Trump folks got their publicity, and so did the Impeach Trump people. They got some great press.
