WYFP: My Ben Affleck Problem

by blue jersey mom

Good evening, Kossacks, and welcome to WYFP. First, here is a word from our sponsors:

WYFP is our community's Saturday evening gathering to talk about our problems, empathize with one another, and share advice, pootie pictures, favorite adult beverages, and anything else that we think might help. Everyone and all sorts of troubles are welcome. May we find peace and healing here. Won't you please share the joy of WYFP by recommending?
In light of the recent events in Baltimore, and the on-going history of voter suppression and police brutality, I want to talk a bit about my own history. I am the classic White Anglo-Saxon Protestant; all my ancestors came to the US from Britain and Ireland, some as early as the 17th century. I have an ancestor who was born in Jamestown in 1635. My great grand-father was William Seay. He fought in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was not exactly a military hero. He developed dysentery and was discharged as medically unfit after nine months. Not an exemplary military career, but he was on the right side of that conflict. He was married to Zilla Harlan, a member of the Harlan family that gave us two justices of the Supreme Court. John Marshall Harlan, the great dissenter and only member of the SCOTUS to vote against Plessy v. Ferguson, is a not-so-distant cousin.. So far, so good, right? Well, it is not that simple. Please follow me below the fold.

WYFP? selling gags to great dictators

Been trying to manage time but so much is getting in the way yet one hopes that some kind of counsel or self-help can improve a waking life that seems no different than one's dreams where one is trying to get somewhere but one can't get there. So for me the choice is either to embrace the Luis Bunuel aspect of my daily life or that Time Management Training doesn't work and that I should prioritize my waking hours in the future around achieving these three objectives:
Clarity around role priorities rather than specific task priorities.
Attention management skills rather than “time management” skills.
A comprehensive workflow management system.
It's not about ageism but more about trying to get past some cognitive biases that play out in any professional job-seeking culture. I learned how much I dislike bosses in my last job especially when I am more experienced and skilled (as well as working in the South) but that is my unwillingness to use old age and treachery to always beat youth and exuberance.

More whinging below the fold...

WYFP? Tomorrow is my birthday.

by bastrop

Yup, tomorrow I turn 43 years old and that is a problem. Not because I am afraid of getting older or because I'm one of those people who broods about aging. In fact, I am largely enjoying my entry into middle age and have never felt insecure or regretful in regard to getting older.

Sure, there are some things I don't particularly care for, like my previously excellent eyesight slipping into the need for reading glasses. That's kind of a pain. I'm also not too keen on arthritis, although I have battled that since long before now in genetic fashion and am frankly lucky it isn't already worse. There are a few other things that kind of suck about aging, but in general I'm a pretty fortunate early 40's and have little I can legitimately complain about in my life.

So why does having a birthday tomorrow present a problem? Jump the degenerative cartilage to find out why I take my cues from Doug and Wendy Whiner...

Tonight I want to sound off about two issues that I think are f$%cking problems. The first is the increasing use adjunct labor in higher education, and the second is Gov. Mike Pence's decision to sign the so-called "religious freedom restoration act" on Thursday.

It is with a heavy heart and diminishing hope of recovery that I share with friends tonight the sad news about our beloved Radar, aka Basement Cat. He has gone missing.

I'm a serf. A real American serf. I do all that is needed to keep a household running. I don't receive pay, or any benefits, but hey-it's a living! I'm a good serf so I applied for health insurance through the New York State of Health website. It has become quite the rabbit hole, I must say. Entrance through the Orange Oort Cloud below.

MFP is cash flow and its opportunity costs, made more complicated by poor decision making due to stress.

Once worked with a real weasel of a boss - wanted to sell me an old Peugeot even though I knew it would be a serious pain in the ass in terms of servicing and parts, but he thought I was stupid enough to buy it because I needed a car. That this happened in the first week on the job certainly made it clear how much of a sociopath he could be. Wage slavery made me think I could forego other life matters and move to the East. Turns out it was even more complicated, as every job has been and how I tried to explain it in yesterday's Skype interview - that almost every place I have had a full-time job, I tended to get hired by places undergoing management changes whether they knew it or not - and of course the culture couldn't adjust or adjust quickly - or in some cases I had to do it with little or no resources, much like the recent foray into Texas. OTOH there's always working retail except that having worked several times for hourly wages between $1.25 in high school to $25 as an adult, the latter is few and far between these days.

So come below the fold for more FPs and perhaps you have some you'd like to share.

WYFP-Valentine's Day Edition

by JeffW

Cute couple, aren't we? This was snapped at dcnw's wedding back in 1980, and our own relationship was just getting started. Today might have been our wedding anniversary, except Calamity Jean researched Marriage Court, and discovered Valentine's Day is their busiest day, so we settled on the 21st, and today is my get ready mark. But before we get started, a word from our sponsor:
