We are facing a lot of problems right now. These problems are larger than any one religion or region, they involve the whole planet. The environment, the endless wars, and the basic rights of human beings to have a government that serves them all. They involve children being separated from their parents, voters being cheated, human beings being deported, others thrown into cages. We're now wondering if members of this administration shook down a sovereign country to save some of the President's family from bankruptcy.
I could go on, and I bet you could probably remind me of some of the scandals I would inevitably still miss. But we're not talking about this Orange Disaster in the most powerful office that there is, or the legion of issues spawned by this small-handed vulgarian, and there is only one person at fault for that. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who represents less than 0.5% of the single branch of government that we control.
Several weeks ago, she made a comment. Words were exchanged, and then hugs and forgiveness. The problem went away, or so everyone thought until, once again, Ilhan Omar willfully made another comment. No one forced her to make these comments, and while passion may force us all to want to take a side, no one forced her to do this. No one also forced her to then start directly antagonizing her New York colleagues.
Accusing a Muslim of having a "foreign loyalty" is blatant Islamophobia. Accusing Catholics of being more loyal to the Pope than their own country hasn't been cool for a very long time. Stand with Ilhan? Fine, I'll give her a third chance, but maybe consider asking her to stop trying to be the topic of converstion.
Spare me how her feelings on this are "more personal" than someone who's family was victimized such a long time ago. She's neither Israeli nor Palestinian, she willfully jumped into this shitshow and is dragging us for the ride. While I understand Mr. Clyburn's point in defense of her as a refugee, can anyone tell me with a straight face that it'd be NBD if a white Democrat said that to Clyburn about slavery, which was twice as long ago as the Holocaust was?
Does anyone really think Cenk Uygar at The Young Turks supports the right of Western Armenians to return to Eastern Anatolia? Give me a break, he literally named his network after a genocidal triumvirate. But most importantly, can we try to move on from our own self-inflicted drama for at least long enough to deal with the Orange Disaster? Thanks.
P.S. This is totally not going to be the last time we find ourselves discussing a House divided instead of a House united because of the words spoken by one Congressswoman Omar. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.
