I love finding new quotes that capture the essence of a good leader. I've run across many over the years and they repeat a theme. It's not about them, it's about you. Let me hear from you guys as to who you look to for leadership inspiration.

Several months ago when Dean Smith passed, I ran across one of his;

A leader's job is to develop committed followers.

A bad leader destroys their followers sense of commitment.

Mojo Friday - Ha Ha Redux - Edition

To me there are three things everyone should do every day. Number one is laugh. Number two is think -- spend some time time in thought. Number three, you should have your emotions move you to tears. If you laugh, think and cry, that's a heck of a day.

― Jim Valvano

We've done lots of thinking and crying recently over tons and tons of issues and world and local events. Time for the third leg of Jimmy V's stool of a full life(day). Humor!

Let's say we get a body camera on every police officer, state trooper, sheriff's deputy and Federal LEO(Law Enforcement Officer, pretty much everyone who wears a badge), NOW what?

Where is all that video going to be stored? How are we going to protect it's integrity? It's like any other evidence that the police gather, but this has the potential to clear someone involved with a LEO. It also has the potential to clear a LEO from charges of excessive force etc. So, how do we keep it from being manipulated? If it's stored by the LEO's agency, how is it protected from editing and other manipulation? Civilian oversight? Who appoints the civilians or how are they assigned?

If the storage of the videos is by a third party, how would they be selected? Bids? Not sure I'd trust that process very long.

We want to make sure the public and the media have access to the stored video and that the LEO agencies and prosecutors don't shield them under the guise of "an ongoing investigation".

What are the Police Departments and other LEO agencies that are currently using "body cams" doing? Is it working? What lessons can they impart?

Questions. I have questions. I'm cynical and a bit of a skeptic when it comes to trusting every PD out there. I'm sure there are some great PDs, but far too many have shown they're not entirely trust worthy when it comes to policing themselves. That statement also includes the FBI who if memory serves me correctly has never found one of their agents guilty of any wrong doing in the shooting death if a suspect.

So what did they do again? The Easter Bunny and the Easter Basket. Yep, the same guys who brought us the Christmas tree gave us the bunny and the basket for Easter. Even the name Easter isn't Christian in origin but started life as a celebration of Spring by pagans. So, oops, they did it again.
Easter celebrations, long favored by pagans, were incorporated into Christianity by early Christians who celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ at the same time pagan worshipers were celebrating the bounty of spring and fertility in general. The pagan traditions became intermingled with Christian beliefs from that point, and various additions to the holiday were made through the centuries--including that of the familiar and calorie-laden Easter basket.

Now if you want to read more from a guy who's trying to unravel myth, mythology and religion around Easter and Spring celebration click on this link. You'll have to read it several times, I think he confuses himself at times, but he does admit that many Christian celebration dates are made up or fused with pagan celebrations.

Mojo Friday - March Sadness - Edition

by TexDem

Well it is a more appropriate name for it isn't it? I mean ultimately there's only one team that ends up happy. Out of 68 teams that enter the tournament only one ends on a winning note the rest of go home with a loss. My Heels were sent home and of course I think the game was called close on Carolina and only the most obvious of fouls were called on Wisconsin and even then they got away with a bunch.

Of course unless your team is loaded with a bunch of seniors or high draft pick you're thinking;

OH MY GOD! Wait til next year! Everybody's coming back! We're gonna kick everyone's ass.

Mojo Friday - Morning Bloom - Edition

by TexDem

How many of you would prefer to see Lisa Bloom's face in the Morning in place of Joe Scaborough? Me too.

Back in December The Daily Caller was attempting to give Ms Bloom a hard time for ripping into Scarborough overnight (because it was assumed Joe was fast asleep in preparation for his "Morning Blow(hard)" show. I must have responded somewhere (maybe here) that MSNBC should replace Joe and his lap buddies with Lisa Bloom because the morning audience would be better informed. Well somebody( @flitedocnm) loved it. He enjoyed it so much he tweeted the idea to Joe, MSNBC and Lisa. Obviously nothing came of it but I thought I'd give it another airing just for fun.

We can talk about it seriously or just for fun. Either way we can create just a little internet buzz. Even if it's just a tiny buzz. Just for the annoyance factor for Scaborough if nothing else.

Grammar Mugs

This isn't meant as an advertisement, just poking fun at our own Grammar Police on Daily Kos. Not overlooking our own writing and grammar pet peeves.

That that that that that that. That that that that that that that that that that that. Can we just leave THAT out? I plead guilty too, but I try to leave THAT out as much as I can.

Let's hear it folks! What drives you nuts about other people's writing because we know yours is perfect?

As we come to the close of Black History Month it's interesting to reflect on a what caught the headlines this month among them a Texas high school raising "White Power" signs (and other acts of disrespect) at a home game with an opposing school trying to fuck with their psyche. What these kids fail to realize and they didn't learn from their parents (who taught them to be racists assholes) is their stunts have just the opposite effect. The stunt didn't just galvanize the opposing team they galvanized the whole Dallas/Fort Worth community against them and brought national shame to their school. So to the racist out there I say; "Keep it up! Stunts like this helps to bring you down."

Mojo Friday - Squirrel - Edition

by TexDem

DISTRACTED

Squirrel has come to be short-hand for being distracted which is exactly what happened to what I was planning to write this morning. I had a topic in mind since Tuesday. I had mapped it out in my head and knew what I wanted to say and then this morning;

SQUIRREL!

It was gone. I can't recall one bit of even a hint of what it was. I even woke up knowing what it was but something happened earlier in the morning while I was contemplating it and it was gone. This is not totally unprecedented for me, I'm extremely ADHD and can be easily distracted, but I also have the ability to recall and get back on topic. Anyone who's had an extended conversation with me can tell you I never seem to talk in a straight line about a topic.

So this opens the door for discussion; What distracts you? What do you do to recall the topic of your writing or conversations after being distracted? Beyond the obvious things such as writing notes etc.

There's been a trend lately of releasing adds for the Super Bowl early. It actually started several years ago by showing the commercials before the game during all the pregame crap. Many commented then that how can it be a Super Bowl Commercial if it's shown before the game and not during it? Exactly!

Well now they've doubled and quadrupled on that and are actually "releasing" these commercials before Sunday. I'm sorry guys, you can't call it a Super Bow Commercial if you show it before the Super Bowl. A Super Bowl Commercial is shown during the Super Bowl Game. Using a commercial before the game and calling it a Super Bowl Commercial is like the GOP saying they're concerned for the middle-class. They can say it all they want, but it doesn't make it so.

Now, Budweiser (Anheuser-Busch) is per usual being the most creative. Instead of releasing their commercial they're releasing teasers about their commercial creating anticipation about their commercial without using their commercial.
