I have an idea for a project where people seek out Muslim-Americans in their area, interview them, get some pictures, and post the profile on their blogs/Twitter/Facebook/everywhere. Could be someone doing good work in the community or just good people trying to live normal American lives.
Most of the Americans cheering the Muslim ban have probably never seen more than a handful of Muslims except on TV or movies. And most of those depictions were likely negative. If a project like this changed just a few attitudes I feel like it would be worth it, but I have some concerns and things I don't know how to do.
First, I wouldn't want the people profiled to become targets for harassment or worse. Should I change their names or just use a first name or leave it up to them? Also what are the legal ramifications? Guessing they would need to sign a release of some kind?
Second, I'm not sure how to begin such a project:
a. How to find someone to profile. I guess there's probably local Islamic centers where I could find someone that could point me in the direction of potential candidates?
b. Not sure what to ask them in an interview or where to do it. I can probably find a lot of good tips from a Google search on doing interviews, but hoping someone reading has experience with this.
c. Beyond the mechanics, how to get other people around the country to do the same in their area. If it's just me doing it, that doesn't help much. I'd like to see 1000s of these profiles from every corner of the country. I guess I could just start doing it, and hope others follow.
So, good idea / dumb idea? Any advice or suggestions?
Thanks.
