There’s been much speculation as to whether or not Trump could be forced off the Republican ticket for president, allowing Pence or some other Republican to run in his place. Most people say this couldn’t happen, especially since ballots have already been printed.
But, according to well-known constitutional scholar Akhil Reed Amar, of Yale University Law School, there is a way that Trump could be replaced, “with or without his consent.”
Prior to the election, and with Trump’s agreement, Trump and Pence could announce that, on Inauguration Day, after taking the oath of office, Trump would invoke the disability provision of the 25th Amendment, allowing Pence to become the acting president. Trump would be the president in name, but Pence would have the power. If Trump were to try to squirm out of an agreement such as this, Pence, with a majority of the Cabinet and assistance from Congress, could under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, declare Trump disabled, whereupon the vice president would become the acting president.
