Back in December, CNN writer, Marianne Schnall, wrote that 2018 Will be the Year of Women. Looks like that idea has gotten a good shot in the arm from the Texas primaries yesterday.
Johnathan Bernstein with Bloomberg just wrote The Big News Out of the Texas Primary: Women.
This seems to me to be a solid piece of journalism. He relates a lot of facts, with a little speculation as to possible reasons, and a minimum of editorializing. In it he describes a number of primary races where women came out on top. One of the most telling stories is of his home district, Texas’ 21st.
Joseph Kopser, had the solid backing of many Washington Democrats and seemed to have support from party actors in the state. He raised the most money, by far. But he's finishing second against seemingly obscure candidate Mary Wilson, who raised the least money and yet is in the lead as I write this with 31 percent of the vote to Kopser's 29.
There is more, but that one is to me the most telling. My wife and I, here in Oregon, often go through our voters pamphlet together to see who is running, what they stand for, who backs them, and what they have to say for themselves. Sometimes we get the chance to vote on a race that has at least one man and one woman. In those cases, unless the man is clearly, and substantially, the better candidate, we usually vote for the woman because we feel there aren’t enough women in politics. US politics in general can use an increase in the feminine viewpoint, and one of the best ways to become a stronger candidate is to get experience. Maybe a little bit of that thought process is going on in Texas right now. Maybe we have a wave of women voters voting for women. I hope it’s a bit of both.
We need more women, y’all.
