The State of Last Resort
If the Supreme Court overturns the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade this month, up to 70,000 more patients from across the South could come to North Carolina for the procedure. Here’s how one clinic near the border is preparing. ...
The title and excerpt begin an eye-opener of an article, at least for me. Thank goodness these facts aren’t a surprise to Planned Parenthood and those who give women the care (ALL the care) they need. Those like Dr. Farris, featured in this story.
I want to direct your attention to this piece and what it implies. The right for women to receive abortion care (ALL the care they need) in NC is right now on the shoulders of our governor Roy Cooper. The last couple of elections knocked out the supermajorities the state’s truly wackjob right wing had in the state legislature. So for now Cooper’s veto will hold. We need to strengthen his hand.
Already, as a swing state almost even in our purpleness, our elections garner huge amounts of attention nationally. I want to ask for more. More help for the people and organizations who make our 14 clinics offering abortion care possible. More help with keeping our state representation from falling into the GOP hellhole we fell into in 2010. I moved here from CA in 2009, so I was taken by surprise to be sure when the wave of shit washed over the state, as it did all over the nation.
I’m an extreme introvert, especially after the pandemic, so I’m always a behind the scenes support worker, I’ll try to find what I can do to keep the nutjobs at bay. There are precious few traditional republicans, like my in-laws who live in a bright blue state. They don’t want to see the government legislating religious beliefs. I hope there will be more of that coming to the surface.
I’m rambling now, so I’ll wrap it up with the important info:
For the short term crisis:
Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
Please consider volunteering if you’re local, and donating if you’re not.
Carolina Abortion Fund
We believe that income should not limit a person's ability to make reproductive decisions.
I’m sure there are more resources, if you know any, put it in a comment and I’ll add the info if I can.
For the longer term retention of everyone’s rights in NC–and everywhere:
Cheri Beasley for US Senate campaign
We already know this Senate seat is crucial to pick up, now it’s exponentially more important, IMHO.
I went looking for a list of key state legislative races… and the only current links I found are to right wing orgs. WTH… Does someone have a resource to make looking up where to help and donate for Democratic NC state legislature races in November 2022? DK Elections could help perhaps. I’m not focusing well today admittedly sorry, if you know any of this info, again let me know and I’ll post it when I can.
Also… our governor is now term limited, so we’ll need another effective candidate in 2024… something to think about. No pressure, folks, heh.
Just saw this editorial, so here you go. Support SB916 if you can. I’m proud to call the bill’s sponsor, North Carolina state Sen. Jay Chaudhuri (D-Wake) our senator. He’s terrific.
Jan. 6 hearings show the threat to election workers. NC bill would confront that (Editorial Board of Raleigh N&O/Charlotte Observer)
[ My usual disclaimer, I’m not a great writer, but I had to post this anyway. If others who can communicate with clarity and organize effectively want to run with this, please do! ]
