My husband’s family is Japanese and I am Chinese. He is 3rd generation and I am 4th generation in the US. Because we grew up in Hawai’i we grew up as a majority of the plurality of ethnicities that call Hawai’i home. I never feel like a minority when I am in Hawai’i. I grew up privileged in Hawai’i and I still enjoy that privilege when I go home to visit. I used to thing that mainland Japanese and Chinese had nothing in common with me because they grew up as a minority and faced all kinds of discrimination that I and my husband did not face in Hawai’i. They had a different outlook from me. When you think about it that is not surprising given the Japanese Internment during WWII. They never could round up the Japanese in Hawai’i even though they thought about it. There were way too many in Hawai’i for them to do it.
That point of difference has become something timely given the statements made by the Trumpkestilskein and his comments about Muslims. What are you going to do Rump? Are you going to round them all up? Even citizens were interred during WWII and the SCOTUS case that allowed the Japanese internment, Korematsu v. The United States has never been overturned. Wikipedia
“The Japanese race is an enemy race and while many second and third generation Japanese born on American soil, possessed of American citizenship, have be come ‘Americanized,’ the racial strains are undiluted.
…It, therefore, follows that along the vital Pacific Coast over 112,000 potential enemies, of Japanese extraction, are at large today. There are indications that these are organized and ready for concerted action at a favorable opportunity.
“It is said, and no doubt with considerable truth, that every Japanese in the United States who can read and write is a member of the Japanese intelligence system.”
— FBI Report
Please check out this out. The pictures chilled my heart and made me certain it must not happen again. The above quotes are from this blog.
“Although we were not informed of our destination, it was rumored that we were heading for Missoula, Montana. There were many leaders of the Japanese community aboard our train.… The view outside was blocked by shades on the windows, and we were watched constantly by sentries with bayoneted rifles who stood on either end of the coach. The door to the lavatory was kept open in order to prevent our escape or suicide.… There were fears that we were being taken to be executed.”— Yoshiaki Fukuda, Konko church minister in San Francisco, apprehended December 7, 1941
It cannot happen again in the United States of America. It must be resisted with all that we can. Just change Japanese for Muslim and it is chilling.

With that note: #WomansMarch has run into “permitting” issues in DC. They say they are working on a solution but that does not include a march on the Mall and the Lincoln Memorial

Housekeeping: Remember what WeeMama said: Is it true? Is it Kind? Is it Necessary?
This Village is a place for like minded people to get together. We are all friends here and we honor Hillary Clinton as a woman with fortitude and forthrightness as we look for a way forward.
Anyone and everyone is invited to join us but please leave the pies at the door. Thank you!
Oh and PS: This is not a safe place. The ones who come here and call it a “Safe Place” and try to get us to call it a “Safe Place” know that it isn’t. These people are just looking for a pie fight and are trying to get us in trouble. There are only two places that are recognized as “safe places” this is not one.
