I had a conversation about this in the comments under the debate thread, and a number of people mentioned the difference between, say, a 30% plurality and a 45% one, but here’s the thing: I don’t trust the DNC and their pals to make that distinction. If Bernie takes 49% of the state delegates, I don’t trust them not to override that decision, and that would essentially ensure that Trump would be reelected because the enthusiasm of the base would be dead on arrival at that point. I am willing to take the risk of a candidate winning with 30% of the vote to avoid the risk of a near-majority being overridden by bad-faith party elites.
I am also extremely disappointed in Elizabeth Warren for taking the stance she did on it. Does anyone here honestly believe that a brokered convention run by a bunch of people who changed the debate rules to get Mayor Stop-and-frisk on the stage would work out any better for her than it would for Bernie Sanders? If they’re willing to override Bernie if he’s in first place, I can’t imagine they’re going to do that just to pick the other progressive.
