I know it is about a year and half too late and my current state just dropped the mask requirements. But every once in a while as I was drifting off to sleep, a reworking of the Man in Black would spool in my head. This time I wrote it down. I’m sure others have made similar reworkings. Feel free to help with the lyrics, word choice, and rhyming.
… Well, you wonder why I always wear the mask
Why I willingly wear this minor task
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone
Well, there's a reason for the mask that I have on
… I wear the mask for the poor and the beaten down
Livin' in the uninsured, coughing side of town
I wear it for the prisoner who is long paid for his crime
But might contract because he's a victim of the times
… I wear the mask for those who've claimed to read
Or listened to the words that Jesus said
Who’re protected only by the blood of the lamb
Their concern for others a selfish God-damn.
… Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose
In our streak of Tesla cars and fancy clothes
But just so we're reminded of the Essentials workers who are made to task
Up front there ought to be a Man In the Mask
… I wear it for the sick and lonely old
For the refugees whose trip left them cold
I wear the mask in mournin' for the lives that could have been
Each week we lose twelve hundred citizens
… And I wear it for the thousands who have died
Believin' Fox News was on their side
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died
Believin' Trump was on their side
… Well, there's things that never will be right I know
And things need changin' everywhere you go
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right
You'll never see my naked face of spite
… Ah, I'd love to unmask every day
And tell the world that everything's okay
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my visage
'Til things are brighter, I'm the Man In the Mask
