In yet another example of out of control police forces in America comes this:
David Hooks was shot in the back and head as he was lying face down on the floor during a drug raid by Laurens County deputies.
That's according to the lawyer representing his family.
It's been nearly four months since David Hooks was shot to death during a drug raid at his East Dublin home.
Everyone seems to be asking today, "Well what the hell do we do now?" or "How do we stop this from happening again?" and "Why do our people never vote in of year elections?"
There's already been a lot written about this. Basically the answer is, "I don't know". Even the great Kos doesn't know how to proceed.
But ol' samfish does.
Maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen this posted on Daily Kos, and I figure it's pretty relevant. This'll be short because 1) I'm not a diary writer and 2) I really don't know what to say. My jaw is still hanging down around my balls.
Looks like the rich are sheltering up to $32 TRILLION DOLLARS in cash in the British Virgin Islands... but now we'll be finding out who they are since a leak has given us their names and emails.
Millions of internal records have leaked from Britain's offshore financial industry, exposing for the first time the identities of thousands of holders of anonymous wealth from around the world, from presidents to plutocrats, the daughter of a notorious dictator and a British millionaire accused of concealing assets from his ex-wife.
The leak of 2m emails and other documents, mainly from the offshore haven of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), has the potential to cause a seismic shock worldwide to the booming offshore trade, with a former chief economist at McKinsey estimating that wealthy individuals may have as much as $32tn (£21tn) stashed in overseas havens
Dear President Obama and (seemingly) most elected Democrats,
Once again there has been a horrible mass shooting brought about by completely insane gun control laws... or lack thereof, more specifically. Once again, we are hearing the same old "There will be time to talk about this later, after the mourning".
But you all know as well as I do that we'll never talk about it. We'll never talk about it in large part because you're all terrified of what will happen electorally. It's fine. We get it. The NRA is big and scary and has guns, too. Not cool.
News is reporting that there was recently an explosion at what is described as the world's second largest refinery, located in Venezuela. Right now, 39 people have died. Sounds like the death toll is likely going to rise :\
CARACAS, Venezuela — An early morning explosion and fire at Venezuela's largest refinery killed at least 39 people Saturday and left the nation's most important source of auto and airline fuel out of commission.
All this anti-"Operation Hilarity" has me... a bit concerned. I should start by saying that, intellectually, I agree with the "it's best not to tamper" folks. However, this kind of thinking is exactly why the left has been losing ground for so many decades. It is a sickness born out of the desire for good intentions.
One of the things I've noticed about liberal-minded people in general: we (they) have this NEED to "make peace" with the very people who would just as soon see us destroyed. This isn't always a bad thing necessarily. It's where a lot of the courage for things like opposing war in the face of unrelenting propaganda come from.
But it's also very much present in politics. We see it again and again and again played out in the White House, the Senate and the House. Democrats just love the idea of a "grand bargain" and all that. They keep talking to the Republicans, even though to so many of us, it's obvious that the Republicans are not going to keep their word.
With regards to the political institutions, people tend to blame it on "Washington culture". That's not entirely wrong, but it also overlooks that aforementioned desire by people on the left to make peace. For all the bitching about "capitulation" by so many people on this site and others like it, I sometimes think to myself, "Yeah, but I bet if you were a Democratic Senate or House member, you'd do the same damn thing."
It's just some deep-seeded desire to get people who hate us to like us.
It's the weekend, so let's all Myers/Briggs personality test! It would be interesting, I think, to see how many of this site's users stack up. We've probably all taken one of these at some point in our lives, but hey. Maybe it's changed.
If you feel like partaking in these festivities, you can take the Briggs/Meyers personality test here.
Take the poll below and feel free to sign off in the comments, if you like.
So I was thinking about it (always a dangerous thing, that) and now that the tent cities are gone, the Occupy movement needs to enter Phase 2, as has been widely discussed.
So here's my proposal for at least one part of phase 2:
Let's all become lobbyists.
Maybe this was reported earlier in the week. I just read it tonight myself, though. If this is old news, my apologies.
Seems like a boycott of Amazon.com is in order, as it would appear that obvious violations of worker's rights and safety are being committed in at least one of the giant online retailer's distribution warehouses.
It's a shame, too. I buy so much stuff from Amazon. It breaks my heart to do it, but I cannot in good conscience buy from them anymore :\
So lately there has been an increased amount of obnoxiousness by so-called centrists and pragmatists on this site.
Ok, fine. I'm not going to rehash their arguments because all know it already. I'm also not going to rehash the arguments from folks like me (who think that Obama and most Democrats are shills for Wall Street/Big __) for the same reason.
No, no. Instead, we're calling a truce. Both sides have no choice buy to accept these terms in the end. The only difference between accepting them NOW vs accepting them later/as they come along is that... by accepting them now, we can be productive, get something done and maybe – JUST MAYBE! – even end up cleaning some of the rot out of the Democratic party in the process.
So here's how it's going to go down from this day forward (if you're all smart):
[XXX talk is avast, me hearties. If'n ye be offended by this (including dirty links, but no pictures), then ye best be shufflin' away)
I stand by Anthony Wiener. I stand by him because he did NOTHING that about 70% of men on the planet with a webcam, cellphone camera or digital camera have done before. I think for women under 40, that number is at about 96%. I know I show my dick off online all the time.
No, no. I'm serious. I do. I fucking love it, too. I've even just done it to random people! It's hot. And you know what's more? I'll bet you that most of you all have, too.
...and don't get me started with the right wing. Christ, the level of debaucherous hypocrisy and repressed sexuality is out of control.
Granted, it's kind of uncool that the congressman in question is apparently married, but that's his own private business. Don't let the fucking hypocritical right wing get away with creating another scandal like this.
Because everyone else is break in' the rules tonight.
And by everybody else I mean like maybe a few other people on the Recent Diaries list. So blame them, not me.
Or blame me. I don't care.
Hey, can you have strike throughs in diary titles in DK3? Let's find out!
Oh, I guess not :(
