Now that we’ve had yet another school shooting, we will undoubtedly have to suffer through another deluge of NRA-backed public officials offering their “thoughts and prayers”, while they continue to vote against any meaningful legislation that would actually do something about the problem.
Attention press: don’t let them get away with just offering this meaningless drivel. Ask them this specific, pointed question: What are your specific thoughts and prayers regarding this tragedy?
Are you praying for the surviving family and friends of these latest victims? The grieving process can sometimes be a lengthy one; are your planning to pray for them over the next 3-6 months? Are you praying for these grieving parents and children by name? Given that these shootings are becoming a very frequent occurrence, you must have quite a long list of people to pray for; how much time does it take you each day to pray for all of these survivors?
Many people of faith consider prayer a two-way conversation; does God speak to you when you’re praying for the victims of these tragedies? Are you sure that the subject of universal background checks and banning assault weapons never comes up? How does he feel about you calling yourself “pro-life” while voting against popular legislation that could prevent tragedies like this from happening again? If Scripture says “the truth will set you free”, why won’t Congress let the CDC even gather data on gun deaths to better understand the truth of how these things happen?
These are the types of questions that should be asked of every politician offering thoughts and prayers while preventing meaningful action. Enough is enough.
P.S. Are you praying for this asshat? What are your thoughts on his actions?
