Senator Mitch McConnell has avoided going on one of the largest statewide daily sports shows in Kentucky, "Kentucky Sports Radio". KSR, and its accompanying website is run by Matt Jones, a former lawyer, who now works on multiple media platforms discussing University of Kentucky athletics, and has acknowledged his own progressive political leanings openly.
Now, perhaps because of the recent poll results, the Senator agreed to appear on KSR radio show, by phone, giving the host a ten minute warning. He had previously appeared on competitors shows, while refusing Matt's repeated attempts to get him to come to the show, even though Alison Grimes had already been on KSR.
In the 13 minute interview, McConnell mostly obfuscated and avoided answering direct questions on gay marriage and on climate change. He did, however, make some news on the Estate Tax issue. When asked what his accomplishments were, and whether he had been able to agree with the Obama Administration on "anything", he touted several deals he had made by negotiating with Biden. He then claimed that one of his successes was the $5Million per person exclusion on the federal estate tax. When Matt questioned the senator on this, the senator actually said:::
the current exemption exempts "virtually every family farm and small business in Kentucky."
That is important because the Republicans continue to run on repealing the current estate tax, and the Senate's potential next majority leader has just said that repeal is not needed for the constituency for whom they are claiming repeal would help! This might not change the McConnell Grimes race, but it's a reminder that politics is, like football, a game of inches, and by scrambling on this short notice interview, McConnell just gave ground.
