Does anyone think for a moment that a Senator who objected to an "uppity negro" being appointed to a government position - even 15 years ago - would be considered for the post of Defense Secretary today ?

How about an "openly aggressive gay" ?

I’ve lived in a lot of places (like Boston) where the power of the church causes corruption,

but I have never seen a more blatant scam than the recent vote by our City Council to

donate 1.1 Million dollars to the church for the “repair” of  Marist College.

The council voted 5-2 Tuesday night to allocate federal Community Development Block Grant funds to repair the historic building’s damaged support structure and veneer. The city’s hope is that a developer will eventually come forward and transform the one-time parochial school, built in 1915, into an economically viable property.

While I share the trepidation of those who are afraid of the corrupting effect of Corporations buying our legislatures and writing our laws, a greater danger to democracy has already taken place with barely an acknowledgement.

It is the extent of church involvement in our politics – something which used to be viewed as semi-prohibited in exchange for their exemption from taxation, but which is no longer enforced and indeed seems a lost cause.

They are too politically powerful for any politician to dare challenge – and James Dobson’s Focus on the Family passed more legislation in the Arizona legislature last year than any other interest group.

In praise of Rush Limbaugh

by tiponeill

On his radio show recently Rush Limbaugh stirred up a hornet's nest of condemnation.

He stated that the only valid sexual activity for a woman was to have sex with her one and only legally married lifelong husband in such a way that pregnancy might result.

Anything else - any sex acts, any other person, any use of artificial birth control was sinful and his conscience was offended by the idea of government sponsored medical care actually paying for birth control so that women could sin.

LOL – Repeal JesusCare !!

by tiponeill

According to National Republican Radio, the christian bigwigs are meeting again
in Texas to try again to coalesce around a single candidate to run against cult
follower Romney.

They reported – with a straight face – that Jesus Christ wasn’t running and so they
needed to compromise, although little Frothy claimed that he was the pro-Jesus
candidate.

(Unfortunately for him, some of the bigwigs consider Catholicism a cult).

I admit that this brought to mind the vision of Jesus Christ presenting his platform
in front of the typical Repub debate audience:

National Hippie Day

by tiponeill

As we enter the Hippie Day four day weekend I, along with millions of others, will use the opportunity to gather with family and friends. We will waste kilowatts flittering to the homes of loved ones, gather ’round the family hookah, stuff ourselves with tofu turkey and play hologames or watch futbol on the holo. And few of us will consider the meaning of the holiday.

This is a shame.

Let Terri Schaivo Die ?

by tiponeill

If one wanted to illustrate the moral cesspool that is the partnership of right wing christianity and the Republican party, on could do no better than remind voters of recent Republican history.

Just as a counterpoint to a recent diary citing the wisdom of Chris Rock, I would rather take advice from Bayard Rustin:

My Letter to AARP

by tiponeill

To: diversity@aarp.org

To whom it may concern:

If you truly have an interest in diversity, you might want to reconsider the vendor you have chosen to provide healthcare insurance.

United Healthcare (and the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce) have just lobbied to rescind Nashville's civil rights protections for its gay and trans citizens, and which bans every city in Tennessee from passing any civil rights laws, for anyone, ever again.

After two tries, Arizona voters have passed an initiative authorizing Medical Marijuana.

The law is very restrictive and many people who need it will not qualify - but that doesn't seem to be enough for some Arizona Democrats.

So they are proposing a 300% tax on Medical Marijuana.
