I recently visited the Seattle Regional ATC.  Unbelievable what goes on there.  Thousands of radars, coupled into hundred of computers and displays.  The guy I got to sit next to was covering from the Canadian border, down to Yakima, WA, from the Cascades to the Idaho border.  everything above 23,500 ft to like 60,000 ft.  Seattle is like retired on the job vs. back east but it's plenty busy.  Without the automation I don't see how anyone could handle it.

They're bracing for a huge turnover.  Most of the guys that came on after Reagan are facing mandatory retirement and have to be replaced.
