GIMP is an amazingly powerful piece of image editing software. It's also totally free. You may find it has a bit of a steep learning curve, and a slightly wonky interface, but once you get used to it you will find you can do nearly anything with it that you can do with a modern version of Photoshop. The only thing GIMP can't do is work directly with CMYK, which is only an issue if you are doing print work like pre-press stuff or color separations.

When I use the term "open source", I automatically think that everyone else knows what I'm talking about - that it's totally free.  That's the geek in me, I suppose.

I also use Inkscape for any vector graphics work that I need (very, very seldom, but useful on occasion).

Adobe's prices for their CS package (or individual components) for home / private use is outrageous.
