  •  Well, I hope you are correct, wiseacre. (0+ / 0-)

Or even early Christians, who converted the largest most powerful empire in the history of the world, the Roman empire, by not resisting but appealing to universal values of empathy and fairness.  Their conduct inspired the conversion of a sadistic people who had been relishing the most barbaric tortures imaginable.  Thank goodness all we have to face are entitled spoiled greedy bastards.

Change comes only through non-violent resistance.  It sometimes takes martyrs, though, to open the eyes of the ones who couldn't see.  Maybe that's what you're thinking about.  But we all have to go sometime.  It might as well be for a good reason, and taking our country back is a good one.

      •  We've put plenty of our own martyrs in war zones (0+ / 0-)

        for profit.

We've killed plenty of martyrs who just happen to live in the wrong place where we want their OIL, RESOURCES, LAND, etc.

Time is overdue for this Country's people to wake up and become involved - not zombies behind a tv or pc.

Be present for the good of all.
        Gandhi proved it worked.
Let us continue this struggle for 99% of the world.

"For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence-

-on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day.

It is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the building of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations."
        ~President John F. Kennedy

        •  Not saying there have to be martyrs (0+ / 0-)

I'm 54 - I've been through all of this already, I know the cost in human suffering our country has perpetrated. I don't need any lectures about it.

Non-violence is a commitment that no matter what opposition comes, including violence, you will stand there and take it and witness it and keep going.  That commitment necessarily will include martyrs in any large struggle.

This is the largest struggle there is.  I hope the opposition isn't violent.  But if they are, it hurts our side and sets us back to be violent, too.  The only hope of winning is through conversion of hearts and minds until so many are on our side that the other side gives up.

OWS is doing things exactly right.  I couldn't be more proud of them.  With any luck, I'll join them soon.

      •  So many illusions. (0+ / 0-)

        So little time.

From your know-nothing critique of 60s and 70s radicalism, to your tea-bag aping meme of "take back our country" (as if it was ours to begin with!), to the spreading of bourgeois reformist illusions, your posts here represent precisely the kind of thing we want to avoid having this action become.

Back to veal pen?  No thanks.

We should rid our ranks of all impotent thinking. All views that overestimate the strength of the enemy and underestimate the strength of the people are wrong. -- Mao Zedong
