  •  Endless, bottomless growth is impossible (0+ / 0-)

What no politician of any stripe or party can honestly tell you is that: growth is over. There are 7 billion people on a planet that independent, non-ideological scientists estimate can maybe support 2 billion people long-term (with proper conservation measures). But now the Chinese and Africans and South Americans and Indians have television, and they have seen that the streets of America really are paved with gold...  "The King of Queens" was a delivery truck driver who had his own air-conditioned house and air-conditioned car and all the food he wanted. Al Bundy on "Married with Children" was a shoe salesman who had his own air-conditioned house and air-conditioned car and all the food he wanted. And other Americans have so much money they have nothing better to do than go on "reality" TV to make asses out of themselves.

The only way we "funded" the American Century of Runaway Growth was by stealing enormous amounts of oil out from underneath Arabs who lived lived in those deserts forever. And stealing vanadium and cadmium for our steel and phosphor for our TVs and computers and gold for our bling that even the poorest Americans display. Only now, there's less of it and the natives are restless and the only way we can still grow - THE ONLY WAY WE CAN STILL GROW - is to get even better at stealing the stuff we "need." And it's not going to work.

Can you imagine the length of career for the first politician to tell us that we need a plan for rational economic shrinkage? Problem is, it's TRUE.
