i don't think engaging in an arms length commercial transaction means i approve of or like anything else my bank does.  we're in a deal -- you don't lose my money and i'll help you not go bankrupt, which would probably dick America over worse.   i hate them, they hate me.  Everyone's happy.  if BoA loses business because of fees, that's the market at work -- i don't see it as a political issue.  where i bank (not BoA, but you've heard of it) hasn't imposed them, just very low interest rates on MMAs.  A lot of smaller and community banks are also extremely sleazy, to go along with a business model that requires them to be actively adverse to their customers ('tis the true nature of banking), and honestly, i just don't mind having convenient ATMs.

When I moved from Chase to my credit union, we went from ATMs on every street corner (seemingly), to about 3 of them in a population area of millions.

The credit union itself is just down the street from my old Chase branch, so it's very convenient.

As far as money machines, however, almost all credit unions are part of a co-op system that allows free use of any cooperating ATM nationwide.

And, of course, if I just need cash someplace, it's pretty convenient to go to a nearby grocery store and buy something small with the debit card and then get cash back.

with the interchange fees, but i guess they go along with it because otherwise you don't buy the package of milano cookies.  (bad example, those things are like crack.)  but it still might drive up retail prices.  (no free lunch and all of that.)  as long as the CU is issuing a visa or mastercard, they're still relying on the big guys to generate the volume to set prices.  but my whole argument is that all things being equal, consumer transactions aren't the best view into political convictions, if i thought i'd be better off with a credit union i might go for it.  i do try to reduce carbon by eating organic and local as much as i can, even if it means paying a little more -- but i also think that'll save me money in the long run.

the impact is usually symbolic rather than make-or-break economically.  But it's nice to let one's feelings be known, nonetheless.
