    And what a delightful child you were, to visit Mrs. R. so often.  I'm sure it meant a great deal to her, especially since you had known her son.  My sister means more to me than ever now that our parents are dead.  She is the only person in the world with whom I can share childhood memories.

    Yes, there is much to be said for politeness, civility, and certain social rituals.  They are the butter on our bread, the cream that sweetens the harsh coffee of life, so to speak.

    You write very well.  I could almost see that small town and Mrs. R.'s kitchen when I was reading your prose.

    Thanks for this essay, I enjoyed reading it.
