Mike lays out the ugly truth:

They projected an unemployment rate between 8.2% and 8.5% in 2011. It will turn out to be 9.0 to 9.1%.  But nevermind that – an unemployment rate of 8.3% is still way too high for our workforce.  Why weren’t they sounding alarm bells in early 2010?

It’s clear from the speech:  President Obama announced the freeze and veto threat, and didn’t sound alarm bells, because he believed that the potential risks associated with not signaling to the bond market that deficit reduction was coming outweighed the reality of high unemployment and trying to expand the deficit immediately.  20+ million people not finding full-time work with certainty is bad, but just the possibility of the confidence fairy getting angry is far worse.

This stands in for policy more generally, and it leads directly to all the failures of Grand Bargains and two-deficits cartwheels when it came to plans for dealing with the unemployment crisis.  It splits the party between those who have to argue for bond vigilantes and those who have to argue against.  The deficit hawkery negates the most powerful market indicator we have for what the government should do – the interest rate.  This approach puts boundaries on the range of acceptable ideas on what can be done for the economy – and places getting stimulus out the door through discretionary spending, outside of Congress, out of bounds.  And meanwhile current interest rates have never been lower – they are negative in real terms for 10 years out.  This was exactly the wrong call to make in early 2010.

Read the whole piece to see we don't need to blame the Republicans.  The austerity hack is already in the WH.

Youth Unemployment is now in line with the arab spring countries.  What an accomplishment!

        Let's go to 2010 SOU:

Let’s go to the 2010 State of the Union (my bold):

Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years.  (Applause.)  Spending related to our national security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not be affected.  But all other discretionary government programs will.  Like any cash-strapped family, we will work within a budget to invest in what we need and sacrifice what we don’t.  And if I have to enforce this discipline by veto, I will.  (Applause.) …

Now, I know that some in my own party will argue that we can’t address the deficit or freeze government spending when so many are still hurting.  And I agree — which is why this freeze won’t take effect until next year — (laughter) — when the economy is stronger.  That’s how budgeting works.  (Laughter and applause.)  But understand –- understand if we don’t take meaningful steps to rein in our debt, it could damage our markets, increase the cost of borrowing, and jeopardize our recovery -– all of which would have an even worse effect on our job growth and family incomes.

A veto threat!  The economy would be strong enough in 2011 to start freezing government spending.  Now there’s been a lot of downward revisions, and they didn’t know how bad the economy would be now.

You can't have a discussion about the economy and ignore this POTUS!  Sorry but that's a fact.

for calling it out.  I've gotten more than sick of this bullshit myself.

And frankly, I don't know who they think they're trying to fool.  They're really not that clever.

You don't know me or what i do. I've donated, volunteered and marched with ows. I am part of 99% and look out for the 99% . You people trying to discredit Obama no matter what he does, are not looking out for the 99%. You are looking out for repubs who are looking out for the 1%. Obama is not the best but to say he is not fighting the 99% when he's tryin to extend unemployment benefits and tax the rich is utter bullshit.

Obama is the only choice we have. I just wish you trolls could realize that.

deal with their personal issues by trying to insult people into voting for Obama.

Wtf are you talking about? I don't know how you got to my personal issues but whatever. I think you're personal hatred of Obama is clouding your judgement.

I am not trying to persuade you to do anything. If you want to not vote for Obama that is your business. You get what you deserve when President Cain or Romney or whatever of the nutjobs gets elected and the cut the social safety net, unemployment benefits, financial aid student, and the EPA. That's your decision. But what I don't like is you coming on here badmouthing Obama and trying to persuade people to not for vote him. Once again, this is a democratic site dedicated to electing Democrats NOT republicans.

Hasn't Obama been trying to cut the social safety net, specifically social security and medicare?

Hasn't he neutered the EPA, specifically overruling their anti-smog regulations?

I'm not saying Obama is equivalent to the Republican candidates, but what does it say that you can't even come up with a Republican list of issues that Obama hasn't already treated as action items?

                    •  I'm saying he is equivalent, in that he and they* (0+ / 0-)

work for the same people, and it's not the 99%. They may use marginally different methods to achieve their common goals, but in the end they're both working for the same thing.

*There are a couple of republicans running who are religious nutters and fanatics who server as useful stooges to keep that bloc voting R; they don't figure into this comparison.

                •  This diary has nothing to do with Pres Obama (0+ / 0-)

or voting for him. It has to do with the Republicans who are willing to do nothing and see the country fail for their own political purposes. It has nothing to do with the President or the Democrats was my point.

                •  Well OWS also knows Republicans support (0+ / 0-)

the 1 percent and only care about protecting the 1 pct.

They also support a police state, more war, and fewer civil rights.

                  •  OWS knows Democrats support the same things. (0+ / 0-)

Although there are more expections in the Democratic Party, and the 99%-er base of the Democratic Party generally isn't as batshit insane as their counterparts in the Republican party.

In other words, lest you crap yourself with glee at the prospect of trotting out the 'false equivalence' canard, I'm not saying Democrats (the people) are the same as Republicans (the people); I am saying Democrats (the political leadership class) are little enough different from Republicans (the political leadership class) as to make no difference to the rest of us.

                    •  Not to the same extreme extent that the Repubs (0+ / 0-)

                      do.

                    •  Well to each his own, I respect your decision (0+ / 0-)

to vote for a 3rd party or not vote.

I really have lost my will to keep fighting this same battle.  I am too busy registering new voters and doing a ton of GOTV with OFA. That is where I am comfortable and I feel good about that. I have been doing this for 35 years and nothing will ever persuade me to stop. It is part of who I am and I Love it.
                      I never give up.

And I respect your right to do as you see fit.

We progressives can focus on several things at one time and not be at odds in our core beliefs..We just go about in different ways and may focus on different goals at one time or another.

                      •  Fair enough. But ignoring facts and evidence (0+ / 0-)

doesn't help anybody, even if it does help you get through the day, so to speak.

What you're doing is hurting yourself and pretending you're not, just the same as the poor rural guy with a stars-and-bars sticker on his rusty pickup hurts himself by voting R all the time. I respect your right to do that, even if I don't respect that you are doing it.

                        •  I feel very confident in what I am doing and I (0+ / 0-)

am not ignoring facts and I am very comfortable with how I am handling things.

But I also respect what you are doing and I respect your feelings on this too.

I am not hurting myself and if I am , that is my cross to bear and I will deal with it, with all due respect.

The horrifying truth is that Obama is so utterly incompetent and sociopathic on the economy that he doesn't really need any GOP help.

Remember, when Obama has been the least fettered on the economy -- HAMP and bank bailouts -- he has been the farthest right.

so I could put you in your place. Your crazy and insane accusations about Obama are disgusting. Please explain to me how he has been sociopathic. I want specific examples. HAMP like I said was inadequate but it is definitely not a right wing program.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, we have two choices next year. I guess since Obama is so incompetent you prefer a Repub to do better than I guess?

Shouldn't you be on firedoglake or something?

How does this sort of invective work, in your head?  I've got a pretty clear theory of mind on how Obama support works, and my posts are aimed at challenging the pillars of that support.

How do your posts further your attempts to either understand Obama's critics or persuade them once you do understand them?

Obama made the deficit his first priority in 2010 when we had 9% unemployment.  That's damn near sociopathic.  In addition, he has enabled bankster fraud on the multiple trillion scale, in a move which is patently unfair.  That's the kind of ideologically motivated failure and indifference to suffering I expect to see in Republicans, who deride empathy.
