  •  This is why the Occupy Movement (38+ / 0-)

was needed years and years ago.

    •  The 1% are not afraid of OWS. They planned... (35+ / 0-)

      ...for this.

That's why they have DHS, and the Patriot act.

"The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism"
      If you haven't already.

The democracy of the US is the last big domino that needs to fall, but the oligarchs have had a ton of practice, over decades, at exactly this process of breaking down a nation.

When the 1% take over a country, and loot it, they plan for the inevitable uprising. A militarized surveillance and police state must be in place before the austerity and privatization begins.

      We've got one.

OWS is one mishap away from being labeled a terrorist organization. Once an "event" occurs, no matter who actually executes it...then all the civil liberties of the OWS "terrorists" will be null and void. FOXNews will howl for blood. The sheeple will quiver in fear.

In fact, the police state needs any catastrophic event to occur, and relatively soon, so they can justify wiping out OWS and shaming any who have publicly supported the movement into silence. It doesn't matter who actually executes the event, OWS will be blamed and rolled up.

Remember, Iraq did not attack the US. 9/11 was used as pretext for invasion. Rush Limbaugh's meth lab could blow up in the next few months, and it will be attributed to OWS.

If OWS doesn't prepare for this, and work to thwart any violence of any kind coming from its ranks, it's gonna get ugly.

      •  It's true they've been planning since (19+ / 0-)

1968, as best they are able.  But, that's not very good.  Much of their effort was on the level of looking for needles in haystacks before they are built.
Time is of the essence.  Conservatives are not good about time, so their timing is often off. The crash of 2008, for example, came too late.  The insurgency in Iraq took off before they knew what hit them. Moreover, propaganda, which relies on people responding in a predictable way to prompts, only works with conservatives.
The reason there hasn't been more resistance to the deprivation is that most people are generous and giving until the deprivation reaches a point where "enough is enough."  Then there's no more give.

So, relax a little but keep your wits about you. :)

      •  This is nothing new (19+ / 0-)

1893: People protesting in DC for jobs were arrested. 1894: Over 100,000 railroad workers go on strike, President Grover Cleveland sends in the Army to break it up. WWI thousands of Americans were arrested for even speaking out against the war. WWII thousands of Japanese-Americans were put in internment camps.

The police state has always been here. It becomes more open when people are actively resisting.

        •  The police state has never had the means of (31+ / 0-)

24/7 invasive, intrusive surveillance that they have now, the ability to decisively shut down communications, and perhaps most importantly, a well armed, angry, frightened and misinformed public who will support the puppetmasters.

Those cops bashing heads? They are part of that angry public. They are also part of the 99% -- they should know that they are protecting the people who are robbing their lives. But they don't, and they won't, understand that.

Yes, we have social media and blogs. And text messaging. But the entire edifice of instant communication depends on two very vulnerable choke points: the internet, and the cell phone networks. If China has shown us anything, it's how easy it is to throttle communications. The ISPs have now dwindled in number to a few very large maga corps and scattered mom and pop operations that are still hanging on, and there are now just  four telecoms that control the entire cell phone network -- and the two largest of those are totally right wing.

We are in a race to win the hearts and minds of the American public, a public which is poorly educated, actively misinformed, largely ignorant, pumped full of fear, and easily manipulated to misdirect their anger and frustration by appeals to nationalism, racism, and religion.

We can never, ever be complacent. We can never assume. We have to work harder, be smarter, better organized, and better informed. "Move your money" showed that the oligarchs indeed are vulnerable. We have to active counter every column that dismisses us as whiners.

We should NEVER assume that what we are witnessing now in the form of a police state is simply more of the same. I'm 61 years old, so I've been watching this for a very long time. I can tell you with no hesitation that what we are facing now is far more frightening than anything I've seen in my lifetime -- not just the militarized police, but a public that so dangerously misinformed, politicians at every level that have been so bought, and a system that is so rigged for the plutocrats. We have been witnessing the greatest theft -- the greatest transfer of wealth and power -- in the history of mankind unfolding before our eyes. We should never underestimate what the plutocrats will do to ensure that the tiger that have grabbed by the tail remains under their command.

          •  "...far more frightening than anything..." (17+ / 0-)

...24/7 invasive, intrusive surveillance that they have now...

The internet is a tool far more capable for surveillance and control than anything Orwell imagined.

Everyone thought that the internet meant freedom and anonymity. It did. For a while. There was just a lag time from its inception and development, the masses implementing it, and then the powers seeking ways to finagle it for control. We're just getting to that point now.

The thing about the Evil that infects the powerful and wealthy is that it is pathologically desperate for absolute control. That's the source of believability in those movies where a protagonist shows up on the radar with ESP, or some super intellect, and immediately the black vans appear outside and snag them and whisk them off to some undisclosed location so the feds can figure out how to exploit those abilities, or kill the talented to keep them from using their powers for the greater good. Hence, Wolverine.

Power and Greed manifest profound Fear, in the Powerful, and Greedy.

Everyone else, who just wants to live their lives in peace, are the victims of that voracious Fear.

And that's what the 99.9% are up against. It doesn't have to be organized. The .1% just have to all have the same agenda, and drives.

I think we're on a knife edge, and this thing could tip either way. No one, not them, and not us, can guarantee an outcome with this much chaos brewing.

Worst case? Their greed could collapse our civilization.

I think that's happened before, if memory serves...

          •  I agree we're at a dangerous crossroads (7+ / 0-)

I was just saying that there isn't some "simple time" for us to return to. The world has always been fucked up, authoritarian, and exploitative. What we have now is a choice between a system that is truly democratic and respects the rights of every individual, or a tyrannical technocratic nightmare.

and the computerization on which it is based has to have played a central role in the catastrophic manipulation of what used to be called financial instruments. In large part because the minutely organized mechanized operation of that theft is beyond the power of individual understanding. And that the elites have been in control of electronic communication for many decades.

      •  Re: the 1% are not afraid... (7+ / 0-)

A bit of a contradiction here:

"In fact the police state needs any catastrophic event to occur, and relatively soon, so they can justify wiping out OWS..."

"If OWS doesn't prepare for this, and work to thwart any violence of any kind coming from its ranks, it's gonna get ugly."

If the police state can just use or invent some violent incident as a pretext, and if that means game over, what OWS does is not relevant, by your reasoning.  However, I doubt that things are that cut and dried.

It is pretty clear that The Powers That Be did not count on the Occupy movement spreading so rapidly and having so much support so soon.  Hence their blunder of attacking such an obviously peaceful movement with force right out of the box, which has backfired on them.  Far from turning people into sheeple, the attempted repression has caused all sorts of people to rise up in support of the Occupy movement.  This has been a very teachable moment throughout the country, as the "Homeland Security" police state has been laid bare for all to see.  Putting this particular genie back in the bottle is probably not possible.

It is hard to predict what will happen next, but more and bigger protests against the austerity plans of the elite would not surprise me.
