The things that capitalism can't or won't provide at a reasonable cost and at decent levels of quality to its citizens, socialism has to. I mean, what the hell are the police, fire department and post office but socialism?

How STUPID do these Repubs think we are? We have ALWAYS had socialism! It's just that we used to refer to it as the commonweal.

    •  I can't even remember the number of times I have (0+ / 0-)

pointed this out.  We have socialist highways, police, firefighters, schools, libraries (Oh NOES, Ben Franklin was a SOCIALIST!!), etc.
Unfortunately, it's sort of like talking to a tree.  The ability to hold two completely conflicting beliefs in the same brain has been stretched to its limit.  If taken too far, it results in mental imbalance, and then mental disability.
The first thing Reagan did was to end the practice of government paying for psychiatry and psychology (except in the case of military/war).  I've discussed this with several mental health experts, and they all agree that most of the mental issues that we deal with today aren't best treated with a pill (see anti-depressants), they are best treated with psychotherapy.  Basically, just talking to someone and letting them know it is perfectly okay to feel overwhelmed or sad because of outside influences or problems beyond their control - is way more useful and helpful than any pill.  But shrinks cost money, and pills are more easily managed/controlled.
Maybe Reagan thought they might point out just how insane his ideas were?  And this was what is now considered a 'liberal' president!

      •  It's called magical thinking (1+ / 0-)

That's what mental health pros call it when someone believes in something that is clearly not possible or backed up by facts (which, of course, places most if not all religions in that category, but society is SO not ready to go there yet).

E.g. tax cuts that pay for themselves, the efficient and fair free market, perpetual motion machines, Mars retrograde, alchemy, etc. Today's Repubs are the latest batch of crazyass magical thinkers. As is Obama, if he still believes in the wonders of bipartisanship, and it's not just a cover for weakness or collusion.

Sorry, but being likeable doesn't make one right.
