  •  When my son and I go to our local OWS (14+ / 0-)

protest events, my sign says, "2 Billion a Week for War, but no money for textbooks?"  My son's sign says, "My Wish List:  Algebra book, Science Book, English Book, World History Book."

I can't tell you how many people we run into at these events who are shocked to learn that we only have "classroom sets" of books and that students no longer have books of their own.  And, those classroom sets have to last 5-7 years which means that they are falling apart -- we use a lot of duct tape -- after being used by hundreds of students over the years.

Plus, we do have to loan some out on occasion -- long term illness situations etc. and they don't get returned --- so I'm currently down to a set of 26 for 32 students, so my kids share them.
