  •  I've been a systems engineer for the last 17 yrs (9+ / 0-)
But I've also worked for a number of employers (the majority of them, in fact) where the expectation is that I suck it up, give them a sizing of a week, work the overtime, and not get paid a dime for it.

as a FTE and as a hourly W-2 consultant and this has been the rule, rather than the exception. I suppose it is partly our fault... particularly as consultants... we know it's a pimp game... and we know if they are paying us 40/50/60 bucks an hour that they are probably billing twice that or more... and we accept just being paid straight time for hours worked regardless of how many.

At least as a consultant you get paid for all the hours you work; as a salaried employee you get squat for hours beyond 40 in a work week...

Fear doesn't just breed incomprehension. It also breeds a spiteful, resentful hate of anyone and everyone who is in any way different from you.

    •  But no health care or retirement (5+ / 0-)

I assume? Kind of a trade off I would think.

      •  yeah... (0+ / 0-)

sometimes you have to take that trade off... particularly in a down economy... but things are looking up economically; I generally can gauge the trend based on the number of head hunters I hear from unsolicitied. Over the last 2 months or so I have gone from 2-3 contacts a week to several a day. Here in the DC area, companies are adding more IT staff, salaries are moving back up and it's becoming more of a seller's market. As things loosen up, they will become less inclined to lowball or trade off salary for benefits... the worm is beginning to turn albeit slowly.
