May I phone in a hackneyed and debunked talking point?

During a political discussion earlier this week, I heard this hackneyed and debunked talking point again about Katrina:  "Those people (?) should have got out of there?  What did they expect living there?"

First off, over 80% of New Orleans residents did evacuate.  What was left were the old, the sick, those families with children, and the disabled.  Those are the ones usually lagging behind no matter what or where the disaster.

Second, what "they" expected was respect, compassion, and a relief effort worthy of the US.  Which, by the way, "they" have been paying taxes for just like those of us not "they".

Of course, pointing all that out, the talking point was then phoned in:  "I don't care."

    No kidding.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich: I'm loving it.
