    My mother never would have wanted to linger like that and make it so hard for my dad.  We all loved her but at the same time we wanted this day to come sooner for my dad's sake. There was never going to be a good outcome for my mom.

    This might be total baloney but I think its only been since the boomer generation that people have been educated enough to see how their upbringing controlled their behavior -and were finally able to change it. For a long time I was hurt by the fact that my dad was so emotionally cold. I dont remember him ever kissing or hugging me as a child. His mother died in an accident when he was 12 and he was the oldest of 4 kids. Apparently his father barely spoke for the next 10 years. I found this out from my aunt, his sister, long after I was grown.  After my dad retired he really tried to be more open about his feelings and even spoke about his dad and what happened. We all do the best we can. Some do better than others. My mom was there for all of us.
