    I think my favorite of all my many favorite bits in Hitchhiker's is when Marvin the depressed robot has to hold off a robot tank so that his human associates can escape.  He is unarmed, except for his wits.  The robot tank is armed with everything else.  It ends with Marvin saying IIRC "What a depressingly stupid machine".

    It's from Life, the Universe, and Everything, the most deeply philosophical of the trilogy IMO.
