  •  Yep, and our insurance (10+ / 0-)

is through a non profit HMO!

Another one of the terrible down sides about this country's stupidity when it comes to health care is the undermining of the self employed and small business people. Another nick in the myth of the land of opportunity.

My husband and I have each had our own business for well over 20 years.  Too late now to seek shelter on staff somewhere for the benefits.  We're too old. We've loved our lives as very small business people, at the helm of our own ships. But I can't imagine how it's going to be possible to do the same for younger folks, in large part because of the cost of health care.

    •  Corporations just love this (8+ / 0-)

      because it destroys their competition.

I love small business.  You get the best information and service there.  And the dollars spent benefit the community.

Too many small businesses have been driven out by big box stores and escalating costs.

There already is class warfare in America. Unfortunately, the rich are winning.

      •  We buy almost everything (7+ / 0-)

through small neighborhood businesses, or at least family owned local business.  We have made it a point to do so, and as a result feel so much more a part of our community.  We know so many of the owners of the shops, restaurants and services we give our business to, and yes, the reward is absolutely the best VALUE for your buck.

But it's terrible sad how many of those small businesses we counted on for years are gone now.  Recently our family owned drug store of over 2 decades closed down when a CVS opened up across the street. :(  We really are becoming the United Corporations of America.  Ever read Margaret Atwood's "After the Flood?"  Chilling and prescient in this regard.
