  •  Mandarin, usually putonghua, in Chinese (6+ / 0-)

isn't really all that hard. There are two problems for most Western speakers. First, there are precious few words with similar roots, no "freebies" from Latin or German. Second, it's tonal, so a word like ma can mean: rope, horse, mother, angry, or question depending on the pitch (Mandarin has 5 tones, Cantonese has 9). The writing system can be hard to handle if you choose to go the full literacy wrote, which I did, but after learning a thousand or so characters it gets pretty easy to build a working vocabulary of 3,000 to 4,000.

    •  So no tricks like adding o to the end of the (3+ / 0-)

      English word? ;)

That used to piss off my high school Spanish teacher so much, but it seemed like every time I had a test and was unsure of the Spanish word and stuck an o at the end, it was the correct Spanish word.

There are some Chinese words that have made it into English. Ping-pong (though in Chinese it's pronounced bing bong), tycoon, kungfu (gongfu), and typhoon are all Chinese in origin. An odd matching is bread, in Chinese it's pan which is the same in many Romance languages.
