  •  Word 'round the campfire says that when the (4+ / 0-)

rustbelt hit the North in the late seventies and early eighties it led to a migration of people who voted republican moving to Texas to the cities like Houston and Dallas. I lived in Houston then and there were Michigan plates everywhere. The rivalry between the Steelers and the Oilers was crazy because in the bars there was a pretty even split between the fans. It became sort of unusual to meet a native Texan.
John Tower and Bush 43 had been elected and lots of pols saw the writing and moved across the aisle to become repubs. Phil Gramm was a dem; as was Perry until they saw the light back in the nineties. Ann was replaced by W and Jim Hightower lost to Rick Perry and things have been pretty darn red ever since.
Except in Austin where we have LLoyd Doggett who is a wonderful progressive in an ocean of red tomfoolery. The repubs keep trying to redistrict him out of office because as it is set up, Austin will never go repub. And Jim Hightower still comes up with some pretty good assessments of the insanity of the day.
