from the layman perspective that the air conditioner is breaking down.

Since basically air conditioning is nothing but flowing air over something cold ( modern ac uses freon filled tubes) this creates a colder ac flow,  the artic summer ice would seem to be the earths system, and just as when our freon runs low, things get hot.  Without the ice, this cant help matters I would think.  add it to the list.

one thing I have never seen answered is, what happens to the earths rotation and axis spin if all the ice eventually melts in a few hundred years. All that weight on the shell of the earth at the poles, redistributed evenly as water across the earth, will have to effect the spin somehow.

that Scotland rose when the glaciers melted over the north of Britain, and is in fact still rising. I suspect that there will be repercussions in terms of earthquakes. Any input from geologists with more concrete information would be welcome.

I just know a sphere spinning is all about its equilibrium, and it doesnt take much to alter it.  But the size, weight, gravity, on such a massive scale as the earth is an interesting subject.  We do know that the axis has shifted in the past, and relatively quickly too IIRC.

        •  I've read that the weight of water (1+ / 0-)

behind the Three Gorges Dam may have an effect on these things, too. You have to wonder about the effects of all the different geo-engineering projects. Wonder, with trepidation.

As the scientists said it would, roughly

will be infinitesimal. The mass of the earth is pretty big and the mass of that ice not very big in comparison.

Still such an effect will be there, youre right, and I think people nowadays also have the means to measure it. That will be interesting for sure. But I dont think it will be problematic in any practical sense.
