  •  4 years after high school, (8+ / 0-)

at which I earned something like a 1.8 GPA (I hated high school and missed, oh, a lot of classes - almost dropped out)I took a class at a community college, Anthropology 101.  I loved it and got an 'A'.  Okay then, let's try another.  Took a math review class (so remedial I didn't even get a credit for it), got an 'A'.  I took 2 more classes, aced them both.

Hmm.  Maybe I could try this full time, but how do I pay?  I applied and received both federal and state grants/needs-based scholarships, which paid for everything but books.  After I earned enough credits for my associates, I applied at a local college for my 4-year degree.  I was accepted and with all my tuition paid, again needs-based grants/scholarships, other than a $500 loan.  I received a B.A. in Accounting, graduating with a 3.62 GPA.

Today, I'm a vice-president of an international freight transportation company.

In other words, the investment we make today via college grants and scholarships in our young people, will pay off for our country in the future.  I'm living proof of that.  And now, 30 years later, you're proof of that.

There's no way many of us could have done it on our own, and I shudder to think what I would have done if those programs had not been there.

Congratulations on your success.  Be so very proud of your accomplishment.  Don't stop now, please keep at it.
