  •  Not sure what his bent actually is at this point (22+ / 0-)

He ran for IL-Sen in '04 as Paul Simon's heir.  Near as I can tell, during his relatively brief US Senate tenure, he generally voted as a Paul Douglas/Adlai III/Simon/Durbin IL good govt liberal.  Durbin (who took over Simon's seat w/ Simon's blessing) was the first one to encourage Obama to run for POTUS.

As someone who worked his a** off in Simon's abortive 1988 presidential run, I assumed in 2008  I was getting Simon w/ an Ivy League pedigree.  I sure as hell didn't think that Obama would name a point man on economic policy who idolizes Alan Greenspan.  I sure as hell didn't expect a HC bill that had individual mandates, no PO, an excise tax, and no drug reimportation.

The HC bill, the too small Stim that contained too many tax cuts, the failure to even seek a debt ceiling increase when W's tax cuts were extended, the epic bailout of Wall Street, and a series of appointments of Friends of FIRE--a pattern emerges at some point.    However Obama campaigned or voted in the past,  his bias is towards preserving the economic status quo now.  Selling out requires prior convictions that may or may not have ever actually existed.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?

But my use of the term "selling out" didn't refer to him selling out his prior convictions.  I meant it more as "the interests of the American people were sold out".

Looking back at Obama's participation in HC "reform", it was mostly hands-off - punting most of the details over to Congress.  I don't know that he ever really had a good "vision" for health care.  It was almost as if he simply wanted something passed,  just to be able to tick it off his list of promises/goals.  His "deals" gave whatever piece of crap Congress came up with a better chance of passing.
