  •  My Mom's home health worker (9+ / 0-)

had to phone in at arrival, and phone in at departure.  She had to do it from the landline.  She did not make a report by phone.  She did charts daily, turned them in every so often. She would have been fired for staying too late.  In other words, she had 4 hours to work.  If Mom fell to the floor, or was in the middle of a bowel movement, the worker had to leave after the phone call.
This is in Texas.  It has been the policy for years here.

    •  The Big Star State certainly has a wee, tiny heart (5+ / 0-)

when it comes to home health workers. They are so needed, and so underpaid, that treating them like manufacturing units instead of humans who treat humans is inhumane.

      •  There are some other problems (6+ / 0-)

with our system.  The workers must report any family neglect or abuse of a patient, but if and when they do, they are punished or fired for causing trouble, losing a patient account.
So, when a family left for a vacation and the elderly woman did not eat for 3 days, and their vacation had to be terminated to come home and care for their mother, who got punished?  The home health worker.  She was removed from that patient, given another patient 20 miles away, her hours cut, etc...
She learned that neglect and abuse had to be reported in some secret code, such as "this is not a good idea", or "skin breakdown and rash might be controlled with frequent bathing".
She left the job, hired out to my family.  We pay her out of pocket.  She loves her work, and we love her to pieces.
