Funny thing about Mass, we are largely blue but tend to go for Republican Governors (lotta wealth here, especially old money, which sums  that up).
Romney was, in essence, a carpetbagger. That election we had Governor Swift (who had been Gov Celucci's Lt. Gov and was passed the baton when Celluci got an ambassador post to Canada from Bush) vs. Shannon O'Brien. So we had a GOP woman vs. a Democratic Woman. The GOP, with Romney riding high after the Salt Lake Olympics (which he "saved" - only not really, he was just a squeaky-clean Mormon figurehead brought into Mormon Utah to squash the bad that had happened with the SLOOC) decided that they wouldn't be able to beat O'Brien, they needed a guy, a high-profile guy. And with ties to Mass, they chose (or, rather, begged) Romney to run here, even though he wasn't technically eligible. But we all know how that works - money changes hands, media PR campaign and poof! Romney is their candidate, with Swift booted to the curb bowing out gracefully to "spend more time with her family."
Then Romney runs as a moderate, a pro-choice kinda guy, all smiles, and wins enough independents to beat O'Brien 50% to 45%.
I think part of it is that Americans don't trust women to be able to run things. It's why Hillary didn't make it, and why so many women have had such a hard time politically. It's getting better, but we still don't get the credit we deserve. And, actually, women should run things. We already do. Women make most of the decisions in a family and are in charge of the purse strings. And how many sex scandals have you heard of involving female politicians? Right, pretty much none.
In any event, New England is a strange animal. We're liberal, but with a conservative bent - it's that whole puritan frugality that makes us socially liberal and fiscally conservative, for the most part.
Anyway, it wasn't too long after Romney won that people started turning on him. We couldn't wait to get rid of the sombitch.

A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward. Franklin D. Roosevelt
