  •  "$100 a month for my satellite tv service" (5+ / 0-)

I pay about $1,200 on property tax and get teachers in schools and deputies in patrol cars and not electrons.

Put a 200% luxury tax on the electronic services since almost no one will pay $300/month for electrons. They'll charge $40 and add $80 tax for $120/month.

NEVER been able to get over-the-air television.

When Cox Cable came into my county in 1983, I couldn't sign up fast enough.

      Why?

I live behind a fairly large hill, south of my property, and between me and the Portland, OR transmission towers for broadcast networks.

I could see ABC sort of, if you don't count multiple ghost shadows, and KPTV, the local independent channel from PDX back in the days before FOX bought it up, was visible most days.

Not anything else. Twisting electronic ant races for the most part, and even the audio signal would be distorted.

And I love not only politics and news, but movies and tv shows, just as much as the books I've loved my whole life (one end of my living room is a library, stacked 3 deep and floor to ceiling). I've lived here since 1980, in this same house.

The only way to get TV was from a cable or satellite provider.

So I've always had that to pay. I'm used to it. It's nearly as much as my property taxes, and I wish it were less, but C'est la vie.

Most of the places I've lived since adulthood were that way. No/few local stations, no way other than satellite or cable to get anything else.

I think if you don't live in the major cities it's the rule, not the exception.

It's a minor point in your comments, but KPTV is a Fox affiliate that is owned by Meredith Corporation, not Fox.  That's probably one reason why they do quite well in the relatively liberal Portland area -- there news coverage isn't screwed up by association with Fox News.

Down in San Francisco/Oakland, Fox affiliate KTVU (owned by Cox) actually has to remind it's viewers that they are independent from NewsCorp and that their news department is good because it has nothing to do with Fox News.

or you're already takin' (or are ready for) the six-foot dirt nap...

I thought they weren't just an affiliate, thought THOM (the house of murdoch) bought them up some 15 years ago.
