  •  No. The 2/3rds majority to pass a budget (7+ / 0-)

    dates back to the 30's.

The 2/3rds majority to raise taxes is the result of Prop 13.

That says something about which one we should have been focused on repealing first, I think.  We founded our infrastructure, schools, ect. during the 40's 50's and 60's while laboring under the budget supermajority requirement.

It's the tax supermajority requirement that broke our state.

    •  the GOP in the 40s through 60s wasn't determined (5+ / 0-)

to destroy the state. since the 70s, and CA's non-coincidental transition from a majority-white state to a no-majority state, they've been determined to burn it to the ground so noone can have it.

you are correct about the budget thing, for the record.

      •  California was a majority white state (0+ / 0-)

        in the 70's and 80's.

Reagan was Reagan back when he was Governor here.

We're the birthplace of the John Birch Society.  We're the home turf of the Reagan Movement.  Our Republicans have, for the most part, been extremist anti-tax "Fiscal Conservatives" since the 30's.

From 1900 to the early 30's, we had a bunch who leaned toward the Progressive Movement, but that's ancient history.

These people didn't change because demographics moved a bit.  They've always been like this.  They hated FDR for building camps and providing food aid and workplace protection for white Oakies and Arkies, too.

They just know that without government services of any kind being available, they can get a maid for 2 dollars an hour.  The maids skin color and accent aren't one of their priorities.

There's no beating them, btw, until we manage to understand that as a movement.

The bizarre myth that the same Capitalists who drove 5 million families of mostly european ancestry from their farms in five years during the dust bowl, who worked children who looked just like their own children to death in mills for a century, who conspired to steal homes in the last decade from victims who were mostly white?

This ignored their motivations, it confuses us about who they are, it confuses us about what the word "we" even means.  It's not just wrong, but it's harmful.  It makes it impossible to address the real problem.

What happened is that the wealthy started throwing money at people like Jarvis and Norquist.  Politics in this country runs on cash.  It's that simple.

        Fear is your only God.

i know about the state's longstanding conservative streak. my point was that before the 70s, even the conservatives understood that there were basic public services that needed to be funded, but the moment that those services were being used for black and mexican kids, folks like howard jarvis suddenly found an audience and a donor base.

there used to be a lot of liberal republicans in this state, but they're all gone now.
