    My dad fell down the basement steps in 1997 and suffered a brain injury. He survived, but the brain damage mimicked that of a stroke, complete with asphasia. While they had insurance, most of the coverage was eaten up just dealing with the initial injuries. And in-house rehab was limited to 60 days while he needed much, much more that we/they could not afford. Watching a very intelligent man struggle to speak and then speak gobbledygook was tough.  He died of complications of prostate cancer in 1999 -- no treatment during the six months he recovered from the coma was probably a contributing factor.
