The point this John Doe investigation brings up, at least for me, goes way back. While it is most surely a huge embarrassment for every citizen of Wisconsin (as it damned well should be!), it also brings a reminder to light that should give all Wisconsinites, and all American citizens hope.

There once was a man named McCarthy. Remember him?

No, this is not a "cheap shot". I promise.

There are times in the life of a community (or even a State) when the citizens learn difficult lessons. This investigation trandscends one particular political campaign, or even one political party. It goes directly to the heart of a very important reality issue.

    "Never again."

When a community, or even a State (or nation) has to recover from the hubris of one man, who thinks himself above the law to create or maintain a political advantage, they do tend to put into place protections "with legs", protections that can go well beyond the disposition of one embarrassment.

It is timely today because it would seem that those such as the Koch Brothers, who would single-handedly OWN the US political structure for non other than their own disjointed and jaundiced political thinking, or even an entire political establishment such as the Republican/TeaParty terrorists currently bringing down upon America such disdain and unhappiness, do not realize that those protections still count. They are still in place, and citizens are very serious about their practice.

Not every candidate, nor party organization is as arrogantly perverse as the Wisconsin Republican machine would seem to be in this instance. Thinking otherwise would be hugely wrong, in my view. Disagreement over issues, political philosophy, etc. is one thing, and the debate can be a healthy and vibrant one. "Fixing the system", however, goes beyond any reasonable political philosophy or issue--or candidate. It is criminal.

The people of Wisconsin suffered then, and they suffer now, because of criminal activities from a man "who would be King". In the 1950's they said, as a single voice, that such indecency would NEVER happen again.

From what these ongoing investigations, and from the voices upraised by the citizens of Wisconsin are saying is, yet once again, that it will not stand. Not because they are Republican, or Democratic voices. Because they are American voices.

As painful as it is, at the moment, for the citizens of Wisconsin to endure this difficulty, one thing is patently clear to us all: they meant it when they said it the last time! Never again.

I couldn't be more proud of Wisconsin today. On, Wisconsin!

My latest writing I am an American citizen. I am a writer. You have been warned.
