  •  That might have been true.. until last August. (11+ / 0-)

I think the debt ceiling debacle last summer finally awakened Obama to the sad truth that when treating with Republicans, he is negotiating with people who have enough friends - and don't want him as one of them.

Also, they they would rather the United State burn to the ground rather than have the country win with him as President.

There is no amount of rightward movement that will get Obama welcomed to the country club.

I think he gets it now.

was ever looking to get "welcomed to the country club."  I think he does what he does because he believes firmly and deeply that it's either the best tradeoff or the right thing.

I guess I don't view people who get to the place Obama is as being super-persuadable.  You have to have a profound sense of self to get that far.

    •  I think the same is true of many on the left. (1+ / 0-)

There are those oln the left that would rather the country burn to the ground rather than it be successful in a way that is not in accordance with their rigid ideology.  I think rigid ideologes are all of that mindset, whetever their ideology happens to be.  I'll allow that in the Repubs' case, their "let the country burn to the ground" mindset is based as much on hatred of the President as it is on ideology.

      •  There's no equivalence in terms of threat (4+ / 0-)

        between right and left.

The left has no major political party with which to do harm to the United States.

I am absolutely certain that you could find two persons who describe themselves as "Left" who fit this.  However, you almost certainly couldn't find a single elected official, and you'll find plenty of Repubs at all levels who feel this way.
